Harrisburg Heat News Release

Harrisburg completed its 2001-02 season with a pair of home losses, finishing with a 10-34 record, the worst in franchise history.

Paolo Ceccarelli made a season-high 21 saves in goal for the Harrisburg Heat, but a second-half surge carried the Philadelphia KiXX over the Heat by the score of 20-10 in front of 5,618 fans at the Farm Show Arena on Saturday night. Harrisburg fell to 10-33 on the season with the loss. Chris Handsor's hat trick (three 2pgs, six points) paced the KiXX, while Zoran Karic (three assists) and Jason Webb (2pg, assist) led Harrisburg with three points apiece.

The Heat ended its season with a loss on Sunday, falling by the score of 14-12 to the Cleveland Crunch at the Farm Show. Steve Butcher's 2pg with 40 seconds left served as the game-winner. Doug Petras made 25 saves in goal, falling to 9-22 on the season. Matt Knowles became the 16th player in league history to score 900 points; he finishes the year with 902. Harrisburg wraps up its 2001-02 season with a 6-16 home record, the worst in team history.

PLAYOFFS, POSTSEASON AWARDS ON THE HORIZON Though the Heat won't be participating, the 2002 MISL Playoffs will go on, beginning this Saturday when Baltimore travels to Milwaukee and Philadelphia travels to Kansas City. Though the KiXX finished second and are thus the higher seed, the club encountered difficulties securing a date at the First Union Spectrum and has agreed to play its first-round game at Kemper Arena in K.C.

The first round will consist of a single game. Winners will advance to a best-of-three MISL Championship Series.

Also upcoming will be recognition of Kansas City's Dino Delevski as the 2001-02 MISL Spalding Scoring Champion; Delevski finished with 210 points, becoming the first player other than Hector Marinaro to lead the circuit in scoring since 1994.

The league will then announce postseason award winners (balloting concluded on Sunday). Awards will be given to a Most Valuable Player, Defender of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, two All-MISL Teams, and an All-Rookie Team.

BASCOME UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGERY Star Heat forward David Bascome, who led the team and ranked 16th in the league with 88 points in 2001-02, underwent successful surgery Monday morning to repair his right knee, injured on March 23 at home versus Baltimore. The procedure repaired a damaged meniscus and ACL.

Bascome will begin rehabilitating the knee as soon as possible, and the 31-year old Bermudan is expected to be fully recovered by the start of training camp in the fall.

WRAPPING UP:

- Matt Knowles ended his first year in a Heat uniform in style, scoring three points against Cleveland on Sunday to become the 16th player in MISL history to hit the 900-point mark for his career. Knowles was Harrisburg's third-leading scorer with 22 goals and 63 points in '01-02.

- Wendell Regis was the only Heater to play in all 44 games this season; Regis has now played in 71 consecutive games since returning from a career- and life-threatening knee injury suffered on February 12, 2000 in Baltimore. The Trinidadian backliner scored a career-high 42 points and blocked a career-high 66 shots this season.

- Defender Nick Corneli was named the Heat's Eichelberger's Player of the Year prior to Sunday's game. The 26-year old, who spent last season with the Toronto ThunderHawks, was the Heat's second-leading scorer with 24 goals and 67 points and finished third on the team in blocks with 62.

- Zoran Karic led Harrisburg in assists with 29 in only 17 games. The 41-year old finishes the 2001-02 season ranked second in league history with 1,702 career points and is the MISL's all-time leader with 654 assists.

- Defender Chris Morman, who made his All-Star debut in February in Cleveland, led the team in blocks for the second straight year with 68. The 24-year old set a club record with 78 rejections as a rookie last year.

- The Heat's 2002 Summer Soccer Camps will begin the week of June 17 and continue through August 9. The club will also hold its popular annual 3 v 3 Soccer Classics on July 6 (Northumberland) and July 20 (City Island in Harrisburg). Other dates and locations may be added.
