The Milwaukee Wave capped an undefeated season at the Bradley Center while giving head coach Keith Tozer his 500th career coaching victory with a 14-7 win over the Baltimore Blast on April 12. Milwaukee then went on to post a 23-22 triumph at Kansas City on April 13 to finish the regular season with a 34-10 record overall and a 22-0 home mark. The victory over the Comets marked the Wave's sixth straight road win as the club concluded the campaign with a 12-10 road mark on the season. Milwaukee, which ended the season riding a six-game winning streak, will host the Blast in the opening round of the 2002 Major Indoor Soccer League Playoffs.

Baltimore (18-26) returned home following the loss at Milwaukee and dropped a 16-10 decision to the Cleveland Crunch on April 13. Cleveland's win in Baltimore came on the heels of the club's 16-15 win in Kansas City (24-20) on April 12. The Crunch (16-28) then claimed the team's third road win in as many days with a 14-12 victory at Harrisburg (10-34) on April 14. Harrisburg's luck vs. Philadelphia the previous night was not any better as the Heat dropped a 20-10 decision to the Kixx on April 13. Philadelphia (30-14) then beat Kansas City, 17-9, at the First Union Spectrum on April 14 in a preview of an opening round playoff match slated for Kansas City on April 19.

MISL SCHEDULES PRESS CONFERENCE TO HONOR SPALDING SCORING CHAMPION

The Major Indoor Soccer League will hold a press conference at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City, MO on Thursday, April 18 to honor Comets forward Dino Delevski, the 2001-02 SPALDING Scoring Champion. The event is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. CDT. Delevski, just 25-years of age, finished the season with 210 points. For more information, contact the MISL at 203-222-4900.

OPENING ROUND OF THE MISL PLAYOFFS SET

The opening round of the 2002 MISL Playoffs has been set with the top-seeded Milwaukee Wave hosting the fourth-seeded Baltimore Blast at the Bradley Center on Friday, April 19. Game time is 7:05 p.m. CDT. In the second semifinal contest, the third-seeded Kansas City Comets will host the second-seeded Philadelphia Kixx on April 19 at 8:05 p.m. CDT. Philadelphia has agreed to play the semifinal contest in Kansas City due to scheduling conflicts at the First Union Spectrum.

The winners of the semifinal matches will then meet in a best-of-three MISL Championship, which is scheduled to begin the week of April 22.

DELEVSKI AND LARKIN EARN PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

Offensive:

Kansas City forward Dino Delevski has been named the MISL Offensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending April 14. Delevski receives the award after posting three 3-point goals, five 2-point scores, a 1-point tally, and an assist for 21 points in two outings last week.

Delevski opened his week with a 3-point goal, two 2-point scores and a 1-point tally for eight points in the Comets 16-15 loss vs. Cleveland on April 12. The native of Macedonia then notched a pair of 3-point goals, three 2-point scores, and an assist for 13 points in Kansas City's 23-22 setback vs. Milwaukee on April 13. The 2001-02 SPALDING Scoring Champion did not play in the Comets final game of the regular season at Philadelphia on April 14.

The three-year veteran finished the regular season with 210 points while leading the League in 3-point goals (21), 2-point goals (51), and total goals (86). The Oklahoma City University product also led the MISL in game-winning goals with six and tied for the League lead in 1-point goals with 14.

The naming of Delevski as the Offensive Player of the Month marks the seventh time this season that the 25-year old striker has been honored with the award. Delevski was also cited for the seven-day periods ending December 2, January 13, March 3, March 17, March 24, and March 31.

Honorable Mention:

Cleveland midfielder John Ball registered five 2-point goals and four assists for 14 points in three games last week.

Ball opened his week by recording a pair of 2-point goals and an assist for five points in Cleveland's 16-15 win at Kansas City on April 12. The Southern Connecticut State University product then added another pair of 2-point goals and an assist for five points in the Crunch's 16-10 victory at Baltimore on April 13. Ball concluded his week with a 2-point goal and two assists for four points while helping Cleveland to a perfect 3-0 record with a 14-12 triumph at Harrisburg on April 14.

The 29-year old two-way specialist finished the season tied for 13th in MISL scoring with 91 points.

Defensive:

Cleveland goalkeeper Jim Larkin has been named the MISL Defensive Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending April 14. Larkin receives the award after going 1-0 with an 11.77 points against average and a .759 save percentage in three outings last week.

The three-year veteran opened his week by registering 21 saves on 28 shots while recording a no-decision in Cleveland's 16-15 win at Kansas City on April 12. The Toronto native then posted the win while notching 13 saves in the Crunch's 16-10 victory at Baltimore on April 13. The 26-year old goalkeeper concluded his week by playing 30 minutes and registering 10 saves in a no-decision during Cleveland's 14-12 triumph at Harrisburg on April 14.

Honorable Mention:

Milwaukee goalkeeper Victor Nogueira went 1-0 last week with a 14-7 win over Baltimore on April 12. Nogueira stopped 13 of 17 shots faced (.765 save percentage) while earning his 27th victory of the season.

Michael King notched four points as the Milwaukee Wave defeated the Baltimore Blast, 14-7, in front of 10,070 fans at the Bradley Center on Friday, April 12. The Wave took an early 6-0 lead as Greg Howes (7:51), Johnny Torres (10:10), and Todd Dusosky (14:48) each recorded first quarter 2-point goals. In the second, Lovelace Ackah registered a 2-pointer at 5:01 before Iain Fraser scored a deuce at 10:02 and Denison Cabral added a 1-point shootout goal at 13:05 to produce an 8-3 Milwaukee advantage at the half. Sean Bowers (6:21) made it a three-point contest with a 2-point strike, but the Wave received consecutive 2-pointers from Pat White (10:48) and King (11:54) to take a 12-5 advantage into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, Martin Dugas (5:15) and J.J. Kremer (6:35) exchanged 2-point goals to produce the 14-7 final. King led the Wave offense with a 2-point goal and two assists while Bowers, Fraser, and Kremer each notched 2-point tallies for the Blast. Victor Nogueira (13 saves) got the win while Scott Hileman (12 stops) took the loss.

Hector Marinaro scored the game-winning 2-point sixth attacker goal at 13:41 of the fourth quarter as the Cleveland Crunch defeated the Kansas City Comets, 16-15, at Kemper Arena on Friday, April 12. The Comets took an early lead in the contest when Dino Delevski struck for a 3-point goal at the 23-second mark of the first quarter. Following a John Ball 2-pointer at 8:48, Alex Zotinca bagged a 3-pointer at 14:23 to give Kansas City a 6-2 lead through one quarter of action. In the second, Ball answered with a 2-point goal at 3:04 before Delevski notched a 1-point shootout goal at 6:11. Marinaro then recorded consecutive deuces at 7:24 and 12:30 to produce an 8-7 Crunch lead at the half. Delevski opened the third quarter with a 2-pointer at 3:06 before Lee Edgerton added a 2-pointer of his own at 6:40. Again Delevski responded, this time with his third goal of the game (7:23), to put the Comets back on top, 11-10. Giuliano Oliviero (13:03) and Chad James (13:37) then ended the third quarter scoring to give Cleveland a 14-11 lead. In the fourth, Wes Wade (6:48) and Jake Dancy (9:10) each notched 2-point goals to reclaim the lead for Kansas City; however, Marinaro's heroics with 1:19 left gave the Crunch the 1-point victory. Marinaro led the Cleveland offense with three 2-point goals and an assist for seven points. Delevski paced Kansas City with a 3-point goal, a pair of 2-point goals, and a 1-point tally for eight points. John Ball got the win while Chris Damico (21 stops) took the loss.

John Ball and Giuliano Oliviero each scored a pair of goals as the Cleveland Crunch defeated the Baltimore Blast, 16-10, at the Baltimore Arena on Saturday, April 13. Lee Tschantret (2:05) scored the only goal of the first quarter as the Blast led, 2-0, after one; however, Hector Marinaro gave the Crunch a 3-2 lead with a 3-point strike at 2:51 of the second. Denison Cabral (11:54) and J. J. Kremer (12:40) each notched deuces for Baltimore before Oliviero (14:48) scored the final goal of the first half to cut the Blast lead to one at 6-5. Cabral opened the third with a 2-pointer at 3:07, but Oliviero (3:18) and Jeff Deist (12:14) answered to push the Crunch in front, 9-8. Shayne Campbell concluded the third with a 3-point goal at 13:56 before Cabral opened the fourth with a 2-pointer at 2:15. Oliviero (11:03) and Ball (11:35) then finished the scoring to produce the 16-10 final. Ball and Oliviero each finished with a pair of 2-point goals and an assist for five points to pace Cleveland. Chris Handsor registered a hat-trick as the Philadelphia Kixx defeated the Harrisburg Heat, 20-10, at the Farm Show Arena on Saturday, April 13. Philadelphia took a 4-0 lead on goals by Handsor (5:13 of the first) and Joe Scigliano (4:35 of the second) before Danny Barber cut the lead to two with a deuce at 5:01.Handsor (7:05) and Omid Namazi (13:53) concluded the first half scoring with the Kixx leading, 8-2. In the third, Jason Webb (47 seconds), Chris Morman (4:36), and Matt Knowles (8:20) each notched 2-point goals to tie the score at eight; however, Matt Brooks (11:34) and Pat Morris (11:47) quickly pushed Philadelphia back on top, 12-8. Omid Namazi (6:03) and Gary DePalma (9:29) extended the Kixx lead before Wendell Regis (12:05) responded for the Heat. Handsor (13:01) and Joel Shanker (13:41) ended the scoring and completed the 20-10 Philadelphia victory. Handsor led all scores with three goals and six points. Greg Howes scored six points as the Milwaukee Wave rallied for a 23-22 victory over the Kansas City Comets at Kemper Arena on Saturday, April 13. The Wave took a 4-0 lead on first quarter goals by Sipho Sibiya (44 seconds) and Johnny Torres (1:12), but Kansas City responded with an 11-0 run to take a seven-point second quarter lead. Ato Leone (2:03, 9:58) and Dino Delevski (4:38, 8:03) scored four straight 2-point goals to give the Comets an 8-4 lead after one quarter. Delevski then nailed a 3-point goal at 1:20 of the second quarter before Howes started a Milwaukee run with a 3-pointer at 6:36. Sibiya then followed with a deuce at 7:25 and Lovelace Ackah added a 2-pointer at 9:22 to tie the score at 11. Delevski closed the first half scoring with a 3-pointer at 10:43 of the second to give the Comets a 14-11 lead through 30 minutes of play. Wes Wade then opened the third quarter with a deuce at 4:22 before Carl Schmitt answered with a 3-point strike at 6:32. Delevski again found the net at 11:21, this time for a 2-point goal to give the Comets an 18-14 lead. After a Torres 3-pointer at 11:38, Brian Hinkey (14:27) pushed Kansas City in front, 20-17. Sinisa Alebic then connected on the third quarter's final score with a 2-pointer at 14:59 as the Wave trailed, 20-19 through 45 minutes of play. In the fourth, Howes connected on a deuce at the 38-second mark before Nino DaSilva made it a 22-21 contest with a 2-point goal at 1:45. Alen Osmanovic then registered the game-winning 2-point goal at 5:01 of the fourth as the Wave completed the 23-22 victory. Chris Handsor (3:54) and Joe Scigliano (8:32) gave the Kixx a 4-0 lead before Andy Cyrus (12:51) closed the first quarter scoring with a 2-point goal to cut the Philadelphia lead to 4-2. After a scoreless second quarter, Matt Brooks began a 6-0 Kixx run with a 2-pointer at 1:51 of the third, which was followed by deuces from Gary DePalma (2:18) and player/coach Omid Namazi (3:22). Goran Hunjak (5:53) brought the Comets within six at 10-4 and Mirsad Dzilic notched a 1-point shootout goal at 8:50 to make it a 10-5 game. After an Ato Leone 2-pointer at 14:28 closed the third quarter scoring, Edgar Bartolomeu notched a 3-point goal at 1:28 of the fourth. Jamie Harding followed with a 2-pointer at 3:27 to make the score 13-9, Kixx. That would be as close as the Comets would get, however, as Joel Shanker (8:43) and Don D'Ambra (13:37) concluded the scoring with 2-point goals as the home team registered the eight-point victory. Steve Butcher scored a pair of goals as the Cleveland Crunch defeated the Harrisburg Heat, 14-12, at the PA State Farm Show Arena on Sunday, April 14. The Heat took an early 6-0 lead as Jason Webb (4:52), Eric Kvello (6:18), and Mike Henning ( 6:47) each notched 2-point goals. Nevio Pizzolitto (7:51) and Chad James (8:11) brought the Crunch within two before the end of the opening quarter and Lee Edgerton (9:04) tied the score at six midway through the second frame. In the third, John Ball (1:54) and Joey Murtagh (7:38) exchanged goals before Matt Tanzini (7:52) ended the quarter by putting Harrisburg ahead by two at 10-8. Matt Knowles then made it a four-point game with a deuce at 5:52 of the fourth before Justin Evans got Cleveland close again with a 2-pointer at 7:06. That goal set-up Butcher for back-to-back 2-point tallies at 9:58 and 14:20 to win the game for the Crunch. Butcher and Ball (2-point goal, two assists) led Cleveland with four points while Henning, Knowles, and Tanzini paced Harrisburg with a 2-point goal and an assist each for three points. Denny Ciornei (12 saves) got the win while Doug Petras took the loss, despite a 25-save performance.

TEAM CAPSULES

Baltimore Blast (18-26)
The Blast went 0-2 during the final week of the regular season with a 14-7 loss at Milwaukee on April 12 and a 16-10 setback vs. Cleveland on April 13. Denison Cabral registered six points during the week and finished third in MISL scoring with 134 points on the season. Cabral also ranked second in 2-point goals (44) and third in total goals (58). Paul Wright finished seventh in League scoring with 104 points and third in assists with 40. Wright also enjoyed a fine outing on the defensive side of the ball vs. the Crunch on April 13, blocking a career-high six shots. Sean Bowers finished 12th in scoring with 93 points while leading the MISL in blocks with 94 and ranking third in 3-point goals with 14. Lee Tschantret finished 17th in scoring with 86 points. Scott Hileman led the League in minutes (2,296) and saves (573) while ranking second in save percentage at .722 and third in points against average at 12.33. The Blast led the League in penalty killing at 22/35 (62.8%) while ranking second on the power play after going 28/46 (56.5%). Baltimore will travel to Milwaukee to face the Wave in the opening round of the 2002 MISL Playoffs on Friday, April 19. Game time is 7:05 p.m. CDT.

Cleveland Crunch (16-28)
The Crunch won three road games in three days to finish the season on a high note. Cleveland registered a 16-15 victory at Kansas City on April 12, a 16-10 win at Baltimore on April 13, and a 14-12 triumph at Harrisburg on April 14. Denny Ciornei registered his first career victory with the win in goal at Harrisburg. Hector Marinaro posted 11 points over the weekend to finish second in the MISL in scoring with 188 points. Marinaro led the League in assists with 73 while raking second in total goals with 60. John Ball enjoyed a career-year, tying for 13th in League scoring with 91 points. Giuliano Oliviero finished strong to rank as the MISL's 18th leading scorer with 85 points. Jim Larkin finished tied for third in save percentage at .719 while Otto Orf had the League's fourth-best points against average at 13.29. Newcomer Kiley Couch finished second in blocks with 86 while teammate Marco Reda was fourth with 71. Cleveland went 7-5 over the club's final 12 outings, which include seven road dates, after going 9-23 in the club's first 32 games.

Harrisburg Heat (10-34)
The Heat lost the club's final two games of the season by way of a 20-10 decision vs. Philadelphia on April 13 and a 14-12 setback vs. Cleveland on April 14. Harrisburg's five-game losing streak to close the campaign overshadowed the play of defender Nick Corneli who set career highs in goals (24) and points (67). The injured David Bascome concluded the season ranked 16th in scoring with 88 points. Zoran Karic posted 29 assists and 42 points in 17 games with the Heat. Matt Knowles became the 16th player in League history to record 900 career points on April 14 vs. Cleveland. Doug Petras moved into sixth place on the League's all-time saves list (3,502) on April 14. Petras finished the season second in the MISL in saves with 520 and fifth in minutes played with 1,894.

Kansas City Comets (24-20)
The Comets went 0-3 last week with a 16-15 loss vs. Cleveland on April 12, a 23-22 defeat vs. Milwaukee on April 13, and a 17-9 setback at Philadelphia on April 14. Dino Delevski claimed the SPALDING Scoring Champion Award with 21 points during the week to finish the season with a career-high 210 points. Delevski also led the MISL in 3-point goals (21), 2-point goals (51), and total goals (86) while tying for the League lead in 1-point goals with 14. Nino DaSilva finished fifth in scoring with 115 points while tying for fourth in assists with 36. Wes Wade finished sixth in scoring with 110 points and second in assists with 45. Alex Zotinca finished 10th in scoring with 98 points and second in 3-point goals with 15. Chris Damico concluded the campaign ranked third in wins with 20 and in minutes played with 1,995. The Kansas City power play was the League's best at 28/46 (60.9%) while the club's penalty kill was the MISL's second best at 26/42 (61.9%). The Comets finished with the MISL's top-ranked offense at 15.3 points per game. Kansas City finished with a 22-14 run over the team's final 36 games after opening the season at 2-6. The Comets will host the Philadelphia Kixx in the opening round of the 2002 MISL Playoffs on Friday, April 19. Game time at Kemper Arena is 8:05 p.m. CDT.

Milwaukee Wave (34-10)
The Wave posted two more victories last week with a 14-7 win vs. Baltimore on April 12 and a 23-22 triumph at Kansas City on April 13. Milwaukee finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak and claimed the club's final six road outings to go 12-10 away from the Bradley Center. The Wave also became the first team in League history to go undefeated at home with a 22-0 record while head coach Keith Tozer claimed his 500th career victory in the win over Baltimore. Joe Reiniger finished fourth in scoring with 131 points while tying for fourth in assists with 36. Brian Loftin tied for eighth in MISL scoring with 102 points while tying for third in 2-point goals with 37. Michael King finished 11th in scoring with 93 points and Greg Howes and Todd Dusosky ended the season tied for 13th with 91 points. Victor Nogueira ended the season with a 27-5 record and a 9.50 points against average. Nogueira led the MISL in wins, points against average, and save percentage (.724). The Wave finished with the League's second rated offense (15.1 ppg) and top-ranked defense (10.6 ppg). Philadelphia Kixx (30-14)
The Kixx won both of the club's games last week to finish the 2001-02 regular season with a franchise record 30 wins. Philadelphia defeated Harrisburg, 20-10, on April 13 before downing Kansas City, 17-9, on April 14. Chris Handsor finished the season tied for eighth in scoring with 102 points. Joel Shanker finished 20th with 81 points. Peter Pappas concluded the campaign ranked second in points against average (10.58), wins (23), and minutes played (2,002) while tying for third in save percentage at .719. Philadelphia finished with the League's second-best defense, allowing 11.3 points per game. The Kixx tied Milwaukee for the MISL's best road record at 12-10. The Kixx concluded the season riding a three-game winning streak and won seven of the club's final 10 contests. The Kixx will travel to Kansas City to face the Comets in the first round of the 2002 MISL Playoffs on Friday, April 19. Game time at Kemper Arena is 8:05 p.m. CDT.
