Harrisburg Heat News Release

LAST WEEK: The Harrisburg Heat went 0-3 last week to fall to 8-28, tying a single-season franchise record for losses, first set in 1999-00 when the team finished 16-28.

The Heat failed to score in three of the game's four quarters in falling by the score of 16-6 to the Philadelphia KiXX at the Farm Show Arena on Thursday night. Doug Petras (8 saves) took the loss for the Heat, while Peter Pappas (20 saves) got the win. Matt Tanzini, Wendell Regis, and Zoran Karic scored for Harrisburg.

Harrisburg fell behind 8-0 and simply couldn't muster enough offense to come back in falling by the score of 20-12 to the Cleveland Crunch in front of 4,457 fans at the Farm Show Arena on Saturday night. Petras (19 saves) was the losing keeper, while Otto Orf (19 saves) got the win. Both Tanzini and Karic scored a 2pg and added an assist for three points.

The Heat's offense perked up in the second half and the team fought back from a 15-6 deficit, but the Cleveland Crunch defeated the Heat for the second time in as many days, this time by the score of 17-14 in front of 3,969 fans at the CSU Convocation Center on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Harrisburg's seventh straight, the Heat falls to 8-28 on the season. Tanzini finished his hot week with a pair of 2pgs for 4 points, and Allen Eller contributed a pair of deuces. Karic finished with three points (1pg, 2 assists) in his first game back in Cleveland since leaving the Crunch after the 1999-00 season.

THIS WEEK FOR THE HEAT

The Heat will look to defeat Milwaukee for the first time this season this coming Friday. Harrisburg is 0-7 against the Wave so far in 2001-02. Kickoff on Friday night at the Farm Show is 7:35 p.m.

Things figure to get truly interesting for the remainder of the weekend - Harrisburg hosts Baltimore on Saturday (7:35 p.m.) and travels to Baltimore Arena to face the Blast on Sunday (3:05 p.m.). The pair of games will mark the first time these two teams have met since the postgame altercation on March 3 which resulted in the suspensions of Heat coach Richard Chinapoo and players Paolo Ceccarelli and Matt Knowles, and Blast players Dewan Bader, Scott Hileman, and Tarik Walker.

All six disciplined individuals have returned from their suspensions and are eligible to play this weekend.

ODDS AND ENDS

- Heat defenders Matt Tanzini and Chris Morman both flew out of Cleveland yesterday to train with the U.S. National Futsal Team in Washington, DC. Both are expected back in time for Friday night's game against Milwaukee. The pair departs as possibly the Heat's hottest two players. Over his last five games, the 25-year old Tanzini has scored 7 goals and 16 points; Morman (24), known as a stay-at-home defender, has scored 17 points and blocked 15 shots in his last 12 games

- Harrisburg has signed forward Allen Eller (who has scored six goals in his first six games with the team) to a contract for the remainder of 2001-02. Heat goalkeeper Doug Petras has inked a contract extension; the new deal will keep Petras with the club through the 2003-04 season.

- David Bascome, who suffered what appears to be a strained knee Sunday in Cleveland, currently appears doubtful for this weekend's games. Bascome needs only two more games to become the Heat's all-time leader in that category.

- With one more loss, the Heat will set a new single-season franchise record for defeats with 29. But the team can take solace in the fact that they will not be the worst in league history: that infamous distinction is shared by the New York Kick (1990-91) and the Denver Thunder (1992-93). Both finished 3-37. Bascome was a member of that '92-93 Denver squad.

- Zoran Karic continues to create points. The 40-year old striker has now scored 5 goals and assisted on 16 others for 23 points in his first 9 games with the Heat. He already the leads the team in assists; the next-closest player is defender Matt Knowles, who has 13 assists in 27 games. If Karic kept up this pace over a full 44-game season, he would finish with 112 points and a team record 78 assists (the current record is 72, set by Gino DiFlorio in 1999-00).
