Heat Sends Five Players to All-Star Game

February 4, 2003 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Harrisburg Heat News Release

Harrisburg, PA - Five Harrisburg Heat players have been selected to play for the Eastern Conference in the 2003 MISL All-Star Game, the League announced on Tuesday. Forward David Bascome and defender Genoni Martinez will start, and forwards Ato Leone and Marco "Chikis" Lopez and defender Chris Morman have also been selected to the team. The five selections for Harrisburg is a new franchise record: the Heat sent three players to the midseason classic in 1992, 1996, and 2002.

Bascome, the leading scorer in the East with 67 points, will make his fourth All-Star appearance (he was voted in a fifth time, in 1997, but missed the game due to injury). The Heat's all-time leading scorer (889 points) will make his third consecutive All-Star trip and third straight start. Bascome, who needs only four points to become the 17th player in League history to hit 900 for his career, is sixth in the League in points, second in total goals (30), third in 2pgs (30), and leads the MISL with 11 power play goals.

Martinez will make his second League All-Star appearance, the first coming during the 1998-99 season when he was with the Wichita Wings. The 27-year-old, whose rights were obtained by the Heat in an offseason trade with Dallas, is the highest-scoring defender in the MISL with 61 points (tied for seventh overall) and this past weekend took over the League lead with 61 blocks, making him a current favorite to become the first Defender of the Year in Heat history.

Morman, one of the brightest young defenders the League has seen in recent years, will make his second consecutive All-Star appearance. The 25-year-old has blocked 177 shots in his first 103 MISL games, including a Heat single-season record with 78 rejections as a rookie in 2000-01. Regarded as one of the best markers in the game, Morman has scored 21 points and blocked 31 shots in 2002-'03.

Leone and Lopez, both acquired in separate preseason trades, will make their first MISL All-Star appearances. The 2001 World Indoor Soccer League Most Valuable Player, Leone is currently tied for 10th in the League with 54 points, and is fifth with 23 assists. The 31-year-old Argentinean has scored 27 points (nine goals, nine assists) over his last eight games. Lopez has been slowed by a hip flexor over the past several weeks, but has scored 42 points in 23 games this season. The 31-year-old playmaker scored 196 goals and assisted on 179 others in 178 games in the WISL from 1993-2001.

The entire 2002-03 Eastern Conference All-Star Team appears on the following page. The Western Conference squad will be announced on Wednesday, February 5.
