Heat Index: the Weekly News and Notes of the Stockton Heat

October 26, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Stockton Heat News Release

News and Notes

In the first four games of the season four players have made their pro debuts with the Stockton Heat. During opening night on October 10, forward Hunter Smith suited up in his first pro game along with goalie Jon Gillies. On Thursday against San Jose, Austin Carroll made his pro debut with the team. In Texas during the team's first ever road trip, Keegan Kanzig played his first pro game with the team.

Last year the Adirondack Flames sent forwards Josh Jooris, Markus Granlund and Micheal Ferland up to Calgary during the month of October. This year, the Stockton Heat have seen Markus Granlund, Jakub Nakladal and Derek Grant receive call-ups to the big club.

In two wins this season, the Heat and goaltender Jon Gillies have not allowed the opposing team to score. Last year it took till December 7 for the Adirondack Flames to record two shutouts, both of which at the time were completed by Joni Ortio.

Approaching Milestones

Freddie Hamilton is 1 goal away from scoring his 50th goal in the AHL.

Kenny Agostino is 3 points away from 50 in his AHL career.

Emile Poirier is just 2 points shy of 50 in his AHL career.

Blair Riley is 12 games away from playing in 300 AHL games.

Colton Orr is 7 PIMS away from 600 in his AHL career. The forward has 1186 PIMS in the NHL.

Heat captain Aaron Johnson is just 14 points away from 200 career AHL points.

Bill Arnold is just 10 points shy of 50 career AHL points.

Recently Accomplished Milestones

Drew Shore played in his 150th game of his AHL career against his former club (although a different affiliation), the San Antonio Rampage on 10/24/15.

Freddie Hamilton played in his 200th career AHL game on 10/21/15 in Texas. To celebrate he scored the games lone goal which stood as the game winner.

Keegan Kanzig made his pro and AHL debut on 10/21/15 in a game against the Texas Stars. Kanzig had a minor penalty in his debut.

Can't Do Much Better than 100%

In the first four games of the season, the Stockton Heat penalty kill has been magnificent. Between Jon Gillies in net and the crop of rotating defenseman and forwards in front of him, the Heat are the only team to have killed off 100% of the penalties taken.

The PK unit will have to be good this week as they take on the San Diego Gulls twice in San Diego. The Gulls power-play unit ranks one spot below the Heat's at 6th in the AHL.

Road Trip Continues

The Heat kicked off their first road trip of the season (and in team history) last week when the team took on the Texas Stars in a midweek clash and then visited San Antonio on Saturday, splitting the games after beating Texas 1-0 and falling to San Antonio 5-1.

This week the Heat's four-game road trip concludes with games scheduled on Friday and Saturday against the San Diego Gulls who've been off to a great start this season but fell for the first time on Saturday after being shutout by the Bakersfield Condors 3-0.

Both the Gulls and Heat will look to get the offense going as the teams meet for a "spooky" showdown!

Hamilton off to Great Start

When the Calgary Flames acquired Hamilton, who'd have thought that the other Hamilton would follow and start off hot with the Stockton Heat!

Certainly when Calgary acquired the younger Hamilton, Dougie, fans got really excited, but it's been older brother Freddie who's gotten off to a hot start with his new club after he was acquired by the Flames just before the season and assigned to Stockton.

Freddie scored a power-play goal during the Heat's home opening 7-0 win over the Rockford IceHogs when his wristshot from the faceoff dot beat the goaltender.

Then Hamilton let the same shot go on Wednesday in Texas which beat the goalie in a near identical spot, also on the power play, which stood as the lone tally of the game and the game winner.

Then on Saturday in San Antonio Hamilton scored the only goal for the Heat in a losing effort but again the goal came on the power play and was from a similar spot to his previous two giving him a share of the team lead in goals with three with Derek Grant.

Gillies Stopping Everything for Heat Wins

It's crazy to think that a rookie goalie just four games into his pro career has two shutouts but both of his wins, and the Heat's, having come from a 19-save shutout and a 36-save shutout.

While Ontario's Peter Budaj leads the AHL with 3 shutouts, Gillies finds himself tied with established goalie Laurent Brossoit and fellow rookie Joonas Korpisalo of Lake Erie for second in the league in shutouts with two.

Heating Up in Adirondack...or rather...Bringing the Thunder

The Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL have been off to a hot start on the season, starting 4-0-0-0 including winning last weekend's three-in-three that saw the team go to Brampton on Friday, open their home season with Manchester on Saturday, and visit Manchester on Sunday.

Leading the way for the team is former Heat tryout player Rob Bordson who's tied for third in the league with 8 points but the Heat's own Louick Marcotte is not far behind him as Marcotte has 7 points including 5 goals which is tied for second best in the league.

Goalie Kent Simpson got the start in Manchester on Sunday and stopped 37 of 39 shots to pick up his first win of the season and since he picked up the last win in Stockton Thunder history on April 11 of last season.

In a look at the other affiliated players from Adirondack, Michael Kirkpatrick has 2 goals and an assist to start the year as does Ryan Lomberg. Mitchell Heard picked up a goal and an assist in his first weekend of play for the Thunder along with 9 PIMS and former Stockton Thunder players Ryan Constant and James Henry have also gotten off to a good start, Constant with 3 assists and Henry with a goal and a helper.

The Thunder play the only other unbeaten team in the East, Orlando, on Wednesday before embarking on a long 7-game road trip.
