Harrisburg Heat News Release
Harrisburg, PA - The Harrisburg Heat served up yet another thrilling finish for its fans on Saturday night, as David Bascome scored a 2pg at 5:04 of overtime to lead the Heat to a 14-12 win over the San Diego Sockers at the Farm Show Arena. The extraordinary continues to become commonplace for the 2002-03 Heat: this was the second overtime game in as many nights for the team (12-10 losers in Baltimore on Friday) and the sixth overtime contest of the season, setting a new franchise record. Harrisburg is now 7-9 on the year.
Despite holding a huge advantage in opportunities (the Heat outshot San Diego 22-9 in the first half), San Diego led 6-4 at intermission. Mariano Bollella (twice) and Anthony Farace accounted for the Sockers' first half scoring, while Marco "Chikis" Lopez and Chris Morman bagged deuces for Harrisburg.
San Diego's Robbie Aristodemo and the Heat's Morman traded third-quarter goals, and the Sockers led 8-6 heading into the third. Carlos "Chile" Farias, the MISL's leading scorer, put the visitors up 10-6 with a 2pg at 4:05. Lopez then decided to shoulder the offensive load, driving home a power play restart goal at 9:33 to make it 10-8, and tying the game at 12:03 when he stole the ball outside the San Diego zone, moved down the slot, and pounded one low past Sockers keeper Nick Vorberg (3-6, 19 saves).
The Sockers appeared to put an end to the rally just 27 seconds later when Aristodemo slid home a 2pg from the left wing at 12:30 to make it 12-10. But just like Friday night in Baltimore, the Heat had some heroics in mind.. Fittingly, it was Lopez who provided them, digging out a ball deep in the left corner and pushing it through Vorberg with just 53 seconds to play to tie the game at 12-12.
Harrisburg improved to 3-0 against San Diego this year at 5:04 of the extra quarter, when Ato Leone took the ball along the right wing and sent a perfect feed off the boards to a charging Bascome, who calmly redirected it into the net for the 2pg and the win.
Doug Petras (5-6) made 5 saves for the Heat in the win.
NOTES: Marco Lopez finished with four goals and eight points for the Heat...The Heat outshot San Diego 45-22...Harrisburg has next weekend off, but returns to action for a two-game homestand on Saturday, December 28 (Dallas, 7:35 p.m.) and Sunday, December 29 (Baltimore, 6:05 p.m.)
