Heat Falls Victim to High-Octane Comets

January 4, 2003 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Harrisburg Heat News Release

Harrisburg, PA - The Harrisburg Heat built a 6-2 first-quarter lead but could not hold on, as the Kansas City Comets' high-powered attack carried the visitors past the Heat by a final score of 20-14 in front of 4,199 fans at the Farm Show Arena on Saturday night. With the loss, Harrisburg falls to 9-11 on the season; the Comets improve to 9-8. Raul Salas made 11 saves in net for the Heat, taking the loss, while Paolo Ceccarelli turned away 25 shots in goal for the Comets. Reigning MISL Most Valuable Player Dino Delevski scored two 3pgs, two 2pgs, and notched an assist for 11 points on the night.

After K.C.'s Bill Sedgewick scored the game's first goal at 5:01 of the first, the Heat rattled off three unanswered 2pgs (by Marco Coria at 5:43, David Bascome at 12:12, and Ato Leone at 12:41) to take a 6-2 lead after one. The advantage was short-lived, however; beginning with Dino Delevski's 2pg at the 6:00 mark of the second, the Comets scored seven unanswered points to build a 9-6 edge, and the Comets would never trail again. The Heat's Martin Hernandez (13:02) and the Comets' Jake Dancy (13:15) traded 2pgs going into the half, and Kansas City led 11-8 at the break.

The Heat still had some life in the third when Mike Henning (3:30) and Genoni Martinez (9:26) sandwiched 2pgs around a deuce from Delevski at 4:22 to produce a 13-12 score in favor of the Comets. But Delevski dealt a fatal blow to the Harrisburg rally at 13:24, when his restart rocket from three-point land whizzed past Salas to make it 16-12 after three.

Nikola Vignjevic popped home a two-point restart goal at 2:07 of the fourth to make it 18-12 before Chris Morman's drive skimmed off Ceccarelli's fingers and into the net for a deuce at 8:49 to cut K.C.'s lead to 18-14. Down just four points, the Heat turned to Hernandez as the sixth attacker, but the Comets were the only team to reap the benefits of that move, when Delevski slid home the game's final goal, a 2pg at 12:09, to generate the final 20-14 score.
