Headed to the Second Round: Blowfish Sweep Copperheads

August 7, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release

Lexington County, S.C. (August 7, 2015) -- Brandon White (Lander University) worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the ninth inning, eliminating the Asheboro Copperheads from Petitt Cup playoff contention. The Lexington County Blowfish defeated the Copperheads 4-3, advancing to the second round.

White got the first out quickly, but immediately ran into trouble. He struck out Ryan Colombo, but a passed ball would put him aboard. Jordan Winawer would single, followed by a walk of Will Albertson. Two straight fielder's choices would end the game without a run home.

White picked up his second postseason save, and his fourth save of the season.

Deric Boone (Auburn University Montgomery) slugged a double in the top of the eighth inning, driving home Derek Olenchuk (Newberry), putting the Blowfish up for good. Olenchuk had doubled prior to move into scoring position.

The Blowfish took several leads, only to be responded to each time. Danny Edgeworth (Mercer University) ripped a ball up the middle, meanwhile J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) attempted to score. Crowe beat the throw home to tie the game at one.

Anthony Paulsen (Winthrop) continued his unbelievable streak, mashing his third home run of the series. His solo shot in the fifth inning gave the Blowfish a 2-1 lead. Two innings later, Paulsen scored on a groundout by Tyler Lancaster (Spartanburg Methodist)

Assistant Coach Dan Shanahan and nephew Jacob Reynolds were all smiles after the win!

After trailing 1-0 in the first inning, Heath Holder (Georgia) battled through a six-inning effort on Friday. He would allow one more run, unearned, in his effort. In the midst of his effort, he stranded six runners in scoring position.

Erik Davis (USC-Aiken) allowed the tying run to score in the seventh, but slammed the door shut in the eighth inning, striking out two.

Asheboro took the 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Albertson. The Copperheads proved to score five of their eight total runs in the series in the first inning alone.

Friday's game was a game of extra-base hits. The Blowfish mashed six extra-base hits, including five doubles and a home run. The Copperheads countered with just one double. It also proved to be a game of missed opportunities, as both teams combined to leave 20 men left on base.

The Blowfish will now face the #2 Gastonia Grizzlies in the West Division Finals. The series will begin this Sunday, August 9, at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. The game will start at 6:05 p.m.
