Head coach Deemer resigns; Wild sign defensive lineman and wide reciever
January 22, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Alaska Wild News Release
With the recent merger into the Indoor Football League and new additions to the roster, the Alaska Wild has seen the direction of the franchise headed into a very positive direction. This past week, the Alaska Wild took a step back as head coach Hans Deemer resigned due to personal reasons. The Alaska Wild is deeply saddened by the departure who the Wild regard as the "first true head coach". With the tools in place to lead the Wild to victory 2009, it was a surprising and disappointing announcement to team officials. Deemer lead the Wild to the first ever professional football victory in Alaska in 2007 and lead the Wild to a first ever playoff spot in 2008. Deemer was an integral part for the Wild in many aspects of the community. Deemer's ambassadorship with the Wild was especially prevalent at Special Olympics events. The Alaska Wild will begin an extensive search for a new head coach before the beginning of training camp in early March.
Sydney Gordon
Wild sign defensive lineman Sydney Gordon With two-time IFL All-Star George Noga moving to Hawaii, the Wild looked to fill Noga's role with a player who can have an equal presence on the defensive line. Sydney Gordon, from Houston, Texas may be an equal caliber player. Gordon (6'2", 300), runs a 4.5 and is strong as an ox. Gordon played withthe Conroe Storm of the American Professional Football League in 2005, the Katy Ruff Riders in 2006, and with the Beaumont Drillers in 2008. Gordon was drafted in 2007 to the All-American Football League (what was to be a developmental league for the NFL) and was invited to a tryout with the Dallas Desperados of the AFL in 2006.Gordon attended Texas Southern University and was a 1st Team All-SWAC defensive lineman in 2003.
Wild sign receiver Art Humphrey The Wild added more speed and depth to the recieving corps by signing WR Art Humphrey this week. Humphrey (6'2", 213) runs a 4.43 40 yard dash and has played in the semi-professional Colorado Football Conference. In 2005 and 2006 he played with the Colorado Wildcats as a strong safety and wide receiver, and with the Denver Pirates as a wide receiver in 2007 and 2008. Humphrey was a CFC All-Star in 2005 and 2008 and will compete with Victor Smith and Mark Lewis for a starting job.
