Hawks Win with Two Pairs

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Vladislav Firstov and Emil Ohrvall each scored twice to help the Waterloo Black Hawks recover from a 3-0 deficit for a 5-4 win against the Lincoln Stars on the road Friday.

The Stars scored three times in a 70-second span in the early minutes of the first period. Josh Lopina got the first one on a setup from behind the net at 5:13. Thirty-eight seconds later, Josiah Slavin came out of the left corner to whip in a backhander. The busy sequence ended as Tristan Ashbrook capitalized when a fortunate bounce came his way off the end boards to just outside the crease.

Waterloo whittled the deficit back to one by intermission. Pressure on Stars goalie Jacob Mucitelli behind the cage led to a turnover and a score by Firstov into the nearly open net at 13:16. A little over three minutes later, the Hawks were on a power play when Hank Sorensen blasted in a shot from the right point, with a defender screening Mucitelli.

The scoring pace slowed in the second, but the Black Hawks were still able to record the game-tying goal at 5:06. A Waterloo rush appeared to stall, but Ohrvall swooped in to take the puck back, scooting a backhander between Mucitelli's pads.

Just 53 seconds into the third, Firstov struck for his second of the game. Given room near the top of the right circle, he was able to step in and wind up for a full slapshot, which flew in inside the opposite post.

An empty net goal with 53.9 seconds to go proved crucial. Sorensen toted the puck from deep in his own zone up the boards to the Lincoln blue line. He shoveled it toward the vacant crease, and Ohrvall knocked it between the pipes with one hand while fending off a defender.

Moments later, the Stars won an offensive zone draw, setting up a Sami Niinisaari one-timer, which hit the top corner.

Logan Stein stopped the other 23 Lincoln shots he faced in relief for the victory.

The Hawks play their final game before Christmas on the road Saturday versus the Madison Capitols.
