Dubuque Erases Three Goal Deficit, Falls in Shootout

Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
The Dubuque Fighting Saints erased a three goal deficit, but the comeback fell just short as Sioux City upended Dubuque in a shootout. The Fighting Saints rallied for their second point in as many nights as Sioux City won 5-4. Dubuque showed grit after a slow start and Matthew Thiessen was perfect in relief of Aaron Randazzo.
-The Fighting Saints were on the other end of a three goal deficit tonight, but showed mettle to equalize the score. After falling behind 4-1 just 4:19 in to the second period, Dubuque started on the comeback trail. James Sanchez scored his second goal in as many nights on the power play to make it 4-2.
-Riese Gaber then potted goals nine and ten on the year as he worked his magic down low to equalize for the Fighting Saints. Gaber has heated up since the Thanksgiving break and now has 22 points this season.
-Sioux City came out of the gates flying and opened up a three goal lead quick. After a slow first few minutes, the Musketeers tallied twice in 20 seconds. Then, early in the second they scored in quick succession again. This time it was two goals in 39 seconds.
-The Musketeers certainly didn't look like a team missing three of their top forwards. Even more impressive, the scored four goals without much of anything from their second leading scorer Martin Pospisil. With Bobby Brink, Luke Johnson and Parker Ford out of the lineup, the Musketeers equaled their combined total from the last three games.
-James Sanchez, with his ninth goal of the season, continued his point streak that was interrupted, but not ended, by a two game suspension. Sanchez now has points in 11 straight games, making it the third longest streak in the USHL this season.
-Speaking of streaks, Matias Maccelli's point streak swelled to 13 games straight, one behind Pospisil for the longest this season. Maccelli collected two assists and he now has 31 points this season in 25 games. Maccelli didn't have many goal scoring opportunities tonight, opting for role of the distributor instead.
-Matthew Thiessen gave his team a chance to win for the second night in a row. Thiessen was in a relief roll tonight, but was perfect in his appearance which began about five minutes in to the second period. Thiessen started the game Thursday night and made a few key stops to keep Dubuque level.
-Ben Kraws was a big reason why Sioux City came out with the win. The netminder made 36 stops for the Musketeers and made a few huge saves to keep the team up and then equal.
-Dubuque now has points in four straight games and six of the last seven. The team is 3-1-3 in those seven games since the Thanksgiving break. The Fighting Saints will look to close out the road swing in Sioux City with a win tomorrow night against the Musketeers.
