Hawks' Road Roll Continues
October 12, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks never trailed Saturday, and used extra time to upend the persistent Tri-City Storm, 3-2, in a shootout at Viaero Events Center
Patrick Russell scored the only goal during the second round of the three-chance tie-breaker. Firing a shot from the left circle, he beat his former teammate Jacob Johansson. The two internationals skated together last winter in Sweden for Linkoping.
Although there was no scoring in the first period, it didn't take long for the puck to find the net in the second. Just ten seconds after intermission, a Mark Friedman shot from the blue line changed directions and went into the net under the crossbar. Zach Sanford made the successful tip. Tri-City evened the contest during a power play at 9:24, as Chase Berger set up Austin Poganski for a tap-in. However, the Hawks converted an advantage of their own at 12:36, retaking the lead when Hayden Shaw went to the net to fire in a rebound.
The Storm recorded the only goal of the third, 6:33 into the period. After a Hawks turnover near the offensive blue line, Thomas Aldworth rolled to the other end of the rink and snapped a wrist shot past the stick side of Israelsson, setting up the overtime and shootout which followed.
Waterloo has now won nine consecutive regular season road games dating back to last spring. The only other time that threshold has been achieved was in the senior era during a stretch of nine games in 1967 and 1968.
Up next for the Hawks is a brief two-game homestand which will represent the organization's breast cancer awareness week, presented by Great Clips and the Breast Care Center. Waterloo will wear special pink-themed jerseys Thursday versus the Omaha Lancers and Friday against the Green Bay Gamblers. Both games begin at 7:05, with tickets on sale from the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office or online at waterlooblackhawks.com.
