The Good, the Bad and the Disappointing

October 12, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Indiana Ice News Release

Bad start-great comeback-bad ending. The Indiana Ice fell behind 3-0 to the Youngstown Phantoms Saturday evening at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Ice battled back for three unanswered goals before falling in 4-3 in a nine round shutout.

Timothy Shoup finished the Indiana comeback 40 seconds into the third period when his blue line slap shot tied the score at 3-all. Alex Talcott and Joseph Sullivan assisted Shoup on his first USHL goal but Indy could not convert chances to win in neither regulation play nor the overtime four-on-four.

Forward Brian Pinho matched a Youngstown's shootout score but Luke Stork scored the game winner as the 9th skater.

After a sluggish first period, fists started flying and the goal lamp was flashing after the first intermission. The visitors scored three unanswered goals to grab control in the first 6:00 minutes of the second stanza. Fredric Larsson drew first blood when his wrister handcuffed Indy netminder Samu Perhonen at 1:07 of the middle frame Stork scored three seconds after the Ice killed their fifth Youngstown power play of the evening. Tyler Spezia lit the lamp 24 seconds later to give the Phantoms their 3-0 lead and a change in net for the hosts.

The change of goaltenders was effective as Jason Pawloski was sharp from the start in his relief effort. Pawloksi stopped all 17 Youngstown shots he faced before the shootout.

Indiana's Michael Preston dropped gloves with Larsson and Matt Roy exchanged swings with the visitor's Blake Christensen before Indy rallied with a pair of second period goals.

Vince Pedrie buried a backhander after Denis Smirnov head-manned a pass to point blank range to put the hosts on the board at 9:16. Patrick Newell also assisted on the play.

Scott Conway won a board battle behind the visitor net and carried the puck into the crease before he nailed his second goal of the season at the 11:19 mark. Playing in his first USHL game, Carmel's Joe Chitwood earned an assist as the Ice skated into the second intermission trailing 3-2.

Penalty killing was one of the few positives Indy could carry into the second period. Indiana successfully cancelled out four Phantom stints with the man advantage in the opening 20 minutes.
