South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
The South Bend Silver Hawks (45-43, 10-8) built a 6-0 third-inning lead and cruised to a 10-2 win Monday against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. The Silver Hawks earned their first series sweep since April 22-24 against Wisconsin and just their second of the season.
Alex Capaul (1-1) took the win for South Bend, allowing one earned run on three hits over five innings. The right-hander walked one and struck out a career-high six batters. Ruben Mejia (1-4) was charged with the loss, surrendering six earned runs on six hits over 2.2 innings.
Eric Groff hit a three-run home run in the third inning to give the Silver Hawks a 6-0 lead. Groff finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
With four doubles and a triple, the Silver Hawks totaled six extra base hits in the game.
Matt Helm got the scoring started with a two-run, opposite field double in the first inning. Raul Navarro added a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Groff's third-inning home run was his first as a Silver Hawk. The Silver Hawks have hit at least one home run in seven of their last eight games.
Right-hander Jesse Darrah worked three innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one earned run on two hits. Kable Hogben recorded the final three outs to seal the win.
The Silver Hawks broke the game open with a three-run sixth inning in which all nine men came to the plate. Ryan Court hit an RBI single, Tom Belza drove one in on a fielder's choice and a third scored on an error from Tyler Stubblefield.
Court finished 2-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to eight games. Belza went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored.
Eight of nine Silver Hawks starters reached base while seven of nine tallied at least one hit.
The Silver Hawks resume play Wednesday, beginning a three-game series with the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva, Illinois. The Silver Hawks have not yet announced a starting pitcher. First pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m. EST. The Silver Hawks return home on Wednesday, July 18 to take on the Burlington Bees.
