Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
J.D. Dudek's penalty shot 2:26 into overtime provided the game-winning goal which boosted the Dubuque Fighting Saints past the Waterloo Black Hawks in a Friday exhibition tilt at Mystique Ice Center in Dubuque.
After being hauled down in the slot on his initial chance, Dudek converted the penalty shot which was awarded, pulling the puck to his forehand and sliding it past Hawks goalie Kristofer Carlson.
The game opened with two first period Dubuque goals separated by 95 seconds, putting the Fighting Saints ahead early. A forced turnover at the Waterloo blue line allowed Seamus Malone to step through the slot unaccosted and slip a backhanded shot through the pads of goaltender Ryland Pashovitz at 7:13. Less than two minutes later, Wyatt Ege's breakout pass from the Dubuque zone setup a two-on-none rush from just outside the Hawks' zone, capped by Nate Sucese's opportunity from close range.
Waterloo drew within a goal at 13:37; Nicholas Carbone fished the puck off the end wall and beat Kevin Reich with a quick chance to the goaltender's glove side.
Pashovitz made solid saves in the second period before departing just past the game's midpoint with 21 saves. The netminder turned away a Sucese breakaway at 8:30, then made a pokecheck to deny Jakob Romo a strong look a minute later.
The effort in the Waterloo crease yielded the opportunity for the visitors to tie the game during the Hawks' third power play of the night at 12:38 of the middle frame. Tyson McLellan threaded a pass out of the left corner, through traffic, to Lawton Courtnall, who scored into an open side.
There was no third period scoring. Dubuque finished the contest with a 43-36 edge in shots on goal.
The weekend preseason series between the Black Hawks and Fighting Saints continues at Young Arena Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. All seats for the game are on sale for $7 and available from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office after 11:30 a.m. Saturday at (319) 291-7680.
