Hawks Climb Past Bucs

With a 4-3 win against the Des Moines Buccaneers Friday at Young Arena, the Waterloo Black Hawks moved past their guests in the USHL Western Conference standings and into a fifth place tie.

Nifty work in tight quarters gave the Hawks the opening goal; at 4:29, moments after killing a Des Moines power play, Bryan Lemos centered a pass from behind the Buccaneer net and Nick Swaney scored on one touch. The Bucs sprang Joe Widmar behind the Waterloo defense for the equalizer at 13:09, however the Hawks followed up 1:24 later. Off a defensive zone faceoff win, Lemos sped past Nick Wolff and cut to the goalmouth to score on a low shot which eluded Ryland Pashovitz.

The Des Moines Buccaneers swung to the lead in the middle period, but Waterloo teeter-tottered back in front before the second intermission. Tanner Karty was left one-on-one against Cale Morris at the front of the net and flipped a shot under the crossbar at 11:16. The Hawks then left Zach Jordan unmarked and the big forward stepped through the right circle to snap a wrist shot into the net at 13:05.

Waterloo rallied with a transition goal at 16:25; Brock Boeser stretched to reach Tyson McLellan's pass in the right circle and snapped the puck right back to McLellan, who was left with an open side. Then with 20.8 seconds to go, Swaney's shot out of the left wing corner was redirected by Niko Hildenbrand to give the Hawks a new lead just before the break.

Nothing found its way between the pipes in the third. Morris made eight saves in the period and 20 for the game during the win. Pashovitz stopped 31 shots in the loss.

Waterloo had started the night one point behind Des Moines in seventh place. With the win and a Fargo Force loss, the Hawks are now tied with Fargo at 56 points.
