South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Dayton, OH - The South Bend Silver Hawks rallied from 2-0 and 4-2 deficits on Saturday night, but couldn't rally a third time in a 7-5 defeat at the hands of the Dayton Dragons. The Silver Hawks have slipped to 21 games under .500 on the road in the 2010 season.
Tommy Nurre and Justin Reed had RBI hits in the second inning against South Bend starter Adam Worthington (ND) to give the Dragons an early 2-0 lead. However, South Bend had the answer with a RBI triple from David Nick in the third and a wild pitch scoring David Narodowski in the fourth to even the game at two.
Mark Fleury's two run homer against Worthington in the fifth inning put Dayton back in front 4-2. The Silver Hawks again rallied, with Narodowski coming through with a big two-out, two-RBI single against Jason Braun (ND) in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.
However, there would be no third comeback for the Silver Hawks, as Dayton rallied for three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh against Bradin Hagens (LP, 3-6). Alex Oliveras homered to start the rally, and after two more hits, Josh Garton lined a two-run double to left-center to put Dayton up 7-4.
South Bend scored a run in the ninth on a RBI groundout from Ender Inciarte, but still came up two runs short in the series opener as Blaine Howell (SV, 5) closed it out for the save.
Josh Smith (WP, 1-1) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for the Dragons.
Narodowski was the only Silver Hawks player to have a multi-hit game with two singles, and he was the only one to drive in more than one run as well.
The Silver Hawks and Dragons continue the final series of the year with game two on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Scottie Allen (4-4, 4.56 ERA) makes his final start of the year for the Silver Hawks against Dayton's RHP Daniel Corcino (1-1, 4.78 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 3:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
