Hawks' Barrage Stuns Sioux Falls

The Waterloo Black Hawks scored five unanswered goals in the last 23 minutes of play Saturday to celebrate a 6-4 road victory over the Sioux Falls Stampede at Denny Sanford Premier Center.

Waterloo trailed 4-1 just past the midpoint of regulation, but the game began to turn with a power play in the minutes before the second intermission. With three minutes left before intermission, Casey Severo collected the rebound of Jonah Copre's shot and flicked a second chance past Trent Burnham.

Then the third period opened with a favorable bounce at 1:43. David Gucciardi's attempt from the left point deflected high in the air off of a defender and fluttered over Burnham but under the crossbar to bring Waterloo back within one.

Gucciardi struck again to tie the game during a power play at 12:37. In that instance, the Hawks' defenseman stretched the twine with a laser beam from near the top of the circle.

Waterloo went ahead for the first time Saturday less then a minute later. Nic Belpedio took on multiple defenders with a rush that bought the Hawks time to change. Wyatt Schingoethe was coming up the ice as Belpedio was coming from behind the net and chopped the puck into the slot. Burnham couldn't deny the close-range chance Schingoethe sent into the crease, putting Waterloo on top with 6:32 to go.

The Hawks and rookie goaltender Emmett Croteau were under duress in the late stages. A penalty with just over two minutes to play was followed by another call against Waterloo less than a minute after that. When the Stampede sent a sixth attacker to the ice, it became a six-on-three power play situation for a time, but Croteau and the Hawks penalty-killers held off Sioux Falls. Croteau made nine saves during the third and a total of 29 for the win in his USHL debut.

The first Black Hawk penalty in that sequence had ended moments before Severo won a defensive zone faceoff, allowing Waterloo to clear the puck and Max Sasson to score an empty net goal with 5.3 seconds remaining.

Waterloo had faced the big deficit after Sioux Falls pulled away in the opening half of the second period. Jack Smith broke a 1-1 tie, sweeping in a puck he found in the crease at 3:03. Reid Pabich and Mack Motzko added goals before the 11-minute mark.

In the opening period, Sioux Falls initially went ahead on Michael Citara's power play goal at 11:43. However Teddy Lagerback scored on his own rebound during the next shift to even the count.

Saturday's game concluded a run of 10 consecutive contests against Western Conference opponents. Waterloo ended the stretch 5-5-0, despite seven of the ten being away from Young Arena.

The Hawks remain on the road for games next weekend in Dubuque and Chicago.
