Asheville Aces News Release
The Huntsville Havoc defeated the Asheville Aces 4-2 in front of 1,105 fans at the Asheville Civic Center Thursday night. The Aces appeared to take the early lead as Billy Cameron shot the puck in a goalmouth scramble,,but the officials indicated that the puck did not cross the goal line completely. The bad luck continued for Asheville as a bad bounce off an Aces defender slid between the pads of goalie Mark Scally (49 saves on 53 shots) for a 1-0 Huntsville lead. The goal was credited to Huntsville's Brandon Doria.
Huntsville added a quick goal to pad their lead 2:02 into the second period, but Asheville's Chester Gallant beat Matt Carmichael high over the glove to bring the Aces within one. Doug Merrell made it 3-1 Havoc with just under five minutes remaining in the second. Then, while on the power play, another disputed goal was awarded to Huntsville as Dan Buccella appeared to knock the puck out of mid-air with his stick and put it past Scally. The Aces argued the call fervently but to no avail.
With cooler heads, the Aces returned for the third period and Chris Kovalcik scored his first professional goal to make it 4-2 in favor of Huntsville. That was all the offense Asheville could muster, even with Scally pulled for over a minute and a half nearing the end of the game.
The Aces are back on the ice Friday night versus the Columbus Cottonmouths. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Asheville Civic Center. Tickets are available at the Civic Center Box Office and through Ticketmaster at (828) 251-5505. Friday night's game will be the only opportunity for fans to purchase the game-worn white home jerseys in a silent auction. Bids can be entered on all player jerseys in the main concourse until the end of the second intermission. Winning bidders will be able to claim their jersey from the player immediately following the game.
