Havoc tip Aces in shootout

ASHEVILLE, NC-- In a bizarre finish to a very emotional contest, the Asheville Aces lose a heartbreaker to Huntsville by the score of 6-5 in a shootout.

The Havoc rolled out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Tim Plett and James Patterson. Brett Roat got the Aces on the board at 13:11. Huntsville regained their two-goal cushion on a Mike Degurse tally at 14:33. In the second period, Joel Petkoff scored a pair to tie the game at three. The Havoc moved back into the lead 4-3 on Plett's second goal of the contest. In the third period, the see-saw contest continued as Janis Tomans goal at 6:56 tied up the contest, 4-4. Dan Bucella put Huntsville ahead at 6-5. With time running out, the Aces pulled goaltender Ryan Person for an extra attacker to force sudden death. With only 20 seconds left, Peter Bournazakis ripped a shot past Adam McLean to send the 1,351 into a frenzy. Neither team scored during the 3 on 3 sudden death period.

The Aces headed into the shootout and got blanked on three attempts. Huntsville got a pair of goals from Steve Howard and James Patterson. Huntsville left the ice thinking the game was over. Aces players remained on the ice thinking they had at least one shot remaining. Referees Jason Rollins declared the contest a Huntsville win.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
