Hauser Blanks IceCats, Monarchs Take Game Three

WORCESTER, MA â Manchester Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser recorded 25 saves to earn his first career playoff shutout, a 2-0 blanking of the Worcester IceCats before 2,260 fans at the Worcester Centrum Centre on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to Hauser's goaltending brilliance and third period goals from right wing Scott Barney and center Yanick Lehoux, the Monarchs earned their first playoff win in over two years and pulled to within one game of the IceCats in their best-of-seven Atlantic Division semifinal series. The Monarchs, who trail the series, 2 games to 1, entered Sunday's action with seven straight postseason losses dating back to April of 2002.
Game 4 of the series is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start on Tuesday, April 20 at the Centrum Centre.
Barney's first career playoff goal broke a scoreless tie 4:04 into the final frame. Center Chris Schmidt and left wing Petr Kanko assisted, with Schmidt feeding Barney near the right post. Barney took the pass and snapped it past goaltender Curtis Sanford, who finished with 22 saves and the loss.
Lehoux's power play goal with 10:39 to play served as insurance as the play-making center whipped his shot over the right shoulder of Sanford while straddling the goal line. Right wing Pavel Rosa and defenseman Bryan Muir shared assists on Lehoux's second goal in as many games.
Hauser, who set a Monarchs team record with seven shutouts during the regular season, recorded the first playoff shutout in the history of the franchise with nine saves in the first period, 11 in the second and five more in the third. The start was his first in the series. Goaltender Milan Hnilicka was the Monarchs goaltender of record in Game 1 and in Game 2.
The teams skated through a scoreless opening period, although the IceCats nearly scored twice on their only power play chance in the frame. With right wing George Parros in the box for hooking, defenseman Terry Virtue unleashed a slap shot from the right circle at the 15-minute mark. The shot whizzed by Hauser, but clipped the left post. Just over a minute later, right wing Mike Glumac rang his blue line blast off the crossbar of the Manchester net.
The Monarchs enjoyed a strong second period, but failed to slip anything by Sanford, who stopped all 13 of the shots fired in his direction. The Monarchs also killed off a pair of Worcester power play chances in the opening 10 minutes of the period.
For the game, the Monarchs were 1-for-3 on the power play and the IceCats were 0-for-4.
The Playoff Picture: The Monarchs return to the Worcester Centrum Centre for Game 4 of the Atlantic Division semifinal series on Tuesday, April 20 at 7:05 p.m. Game 5 of the series will be played at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Thursday, April 22 at 7:05 p.m. If necessary, Game 6 of the series will be played at the Centrum Centre on Saturday, April 24 at 7:05 p.m., and Game 7 of the series will be played at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday, April 25 at 4:05 p.m.
