Happy Valentin's Day: Surf Nab Righty In Swap With Fort Worth

February 12, 2008 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Atlantic City Surf News Release

Atlantic City, N.J. - The Atlantic City Surf baseball club has traded outfielder Ed Montague to the Fort Worth Cats of the American Association in exchange for righthanded pitcher Dan Valentin.

Montague had a superb 2007 season, his first with the Surf. He led the Canadian-American League with 32 doubles and finished third in the circuit with 69 RBI, to go along with six home runs and a .302 batting average. The trade marks a return to the American Association for the native of Daly City, Calif., as he spent most of 2006 with Pensacola (Fla.), where he hit .326 in 82 games for the Pelicans.

Montague played in 2005 with San Diego of the independent Golden League. Previously, the 27-year-old reached as high as Class A in the Colorado Rockies' and Los Angeles Dodgers' farm systems, after being signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Pepperdine University in 2002.

Valentin is entering his seventh season in independent baseball. He spent 2007 with league champion Fort Worth, splitting time as a starter and a reliever. The Teaneck, N.J., native went 5-5 with a 4.00 ERA, striking out 52 hitters in 69.2 innings of work. Valentin also won an American Association championship ring with Fort Worth in 2006. The 29-year-old has spent time in the United, Central and Frontier Leagues, and was signed out of Liberty (Va.) University by Washington (Pa.) of the Frontier League in 2002.

"We're sorry to lose Ed Montague, but he wanted to play closer to his family in Texas, and we're happy to help him out," Surf manager Chris Carminucci said. "Valentin is a solid addition to our club, and he should be an asset to our pitching staff."

The Atlantic City Surf open their 2008 Can-Am League home schedule on May 26 against the league's new Ottawa franchise. Season and single-game tickets are available by calling the Surf ticket office at (609) 344-7873.
