Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC "" Josh Hampton had a perfect four-for-four night at the plate, including the game winning single in the bottom of the ninth as the Steamers defeated the Sharks 4-3 at Historic Hicks Field on Friday night.
In the second meeting in as many days between the Edenton Steamers and the Wilmington Sharks, Connor Cuff (University of Pennsylvania) made his first start for Edenton against Beau Dees of Wilmington.
To say Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) continued his hot hitting would be an understatement when he got the Steamers on the board 1-0 in the bottom of the first after Laz Villa (Reedley College) walked and stole second base.
Connor Cuff pitched four scoreless innings of one hit baseball without allowing a walk and striking out seven. He gave way to David St. Lawrence (Brown University), who pitched a scoreless fifth inning in his first Coastal Plain League action of 2013.
Dees, for Wilmington matched Cuff and St. Lawrence for zeros after the first inning until he came out after five innings. His final line was two hits allowed, one run, he walked two and struck out three. His only miscue was the Hampton RBI double in the bottom of the first.
Cambirc Moye hit a towering two-run home run off of Beau Beaudreau (Flagler College) in the top of the sixth, his first of the year and the sixth long ball the Steamers have given up in four games this season. The two-run shot gave Wilmington their first lead of the night; 2-1.
The lead didn't last long, in the bottom half of the sixth, Hampton hit his third double of the game and later came around to score on Nick Millers (University of Northern Colorado) RBI single that evened the score at 2-2.
It was a bullpen game from this point forward and Edenton struck first against Derrick Justice after Villa beat out a bunt single in the bottom of the eighth. Two walks later the bases were loaded and Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) was called upon to pinch hit. He worked an RBI walk to reclaim the lead for Edenton 3-2.
Jake McCoy (College of the Desert) emerged from the bullpen for his first save opportunity and promptly allowed two infield singles that netted the tying run for Wilmington. Matt Pollock reached on an infield single, then stole his way to third and scored on Chance Shepards infield single.
That set up the drama in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs Villa walked and Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) picked a great time to pick up his first hit of the night, a single that moved Villa to second.
That brought up the man of the hour, Josh Hampton, who to this point was seven for his last eight going back to last night in Wilmington where he went four-for-five in the win.
Seth Lucio was on the mound and Hampton hit a high shallow pop fly off the end of the bat that centerfielder Zac Macaneny dove headlong for and couldn't get, which allowed Villa to score the winning run and send everyone home happy with a 4-3 Edenton win.
"The guys fought hard all game long, even after we gave one back in the ninth. Twice when we fell behind they responded the next half inning with tying runs. Awesome job all around", said coach Dan Pirillo. "I really wish there had been more people here to see this game, a walk-off win on a Friday night. These guys are really performing for this community."
Hampton went four-for-four in the win, pushing his two-game total to eight-for-nine with a homerun, triple, three doubles, three singles, four runs, six RBIs, stolen base and a walk.
The pitching was near flawless again as Edenton struck out double digit batters for the third straight game this season. Villa extended his hitting streak to four games, the only Steamer to have a hit in every game this season thus far.
McCoy got the win for his one inning of relief and Lucio took the loss. Edenton will welcome in Peninsula tomorrow for the first time this season. First pitch at 7 pm.
