
Hampton Delivers Extra Inning Victory

MARTINSVILLE, VA "" With two runs in the eighth inning, the Steamers tied the ball game and Josh Hampton hit a three-run double in the tenth to complete the comeback and steal a 5-2 win from the Martinsville Mustangs at Hooker Field on Saturday Night.
Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado) made his second start of the season for Edenton and Taylor Saucedo made his second start of the season for the Martinsville Mustangs.
Through the first two innings there were no hits for either side and the only base runner was Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University), who reached on an error.
Edenton forgot their defense in the bottom of the third after being retired in order in the top half. Martinsville got a lead-off single from Jonathan Beaubien and he moved to second on a groundout. Josh Alberius then singled and on the play Chase Harris (University of New Mexico) committed a throwing error that allowed Beaubien to score and Alberius was standing on third.
It took the Steamers until the fourth inning to pick up their first hit and through seven complete, Saucedo had been dominate, allowing only two safeties and a base on balls.
In the bottom of the sixth, Martinsville tacked on an insurance run after Devan Ahart was issued a walk and Keelin Rasch knocked him in with a single to make it 2-0 "ÃËStangs.
Miller pitched six innings for Edenton, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, two walks and he struck out three.
Saucedo's pitches danced around the plate for seven shut-out innings, allowing only two hits, issuing one walk and striking out three.
Emerging from the bullpen for the Mustangs was Cody Creamer in relief of Taylor Saucedo. Head coach Bryan Hill went to his bench with one out and Jacob Reese (Eastern Illinois University) on first after singling. Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) pinch hit for Sam Bumpers (Lamar University) and doubled. Harris singled right behind him, driving in Reese and Laz Villa (Reedley College) singled driving in Tyler Eager (Abilene Christian University), who pinch ran for Kirsch. The back-to-back RBI singles tied the ball game at two runs apiece.
Neither Miller nor Saucedo earned a decision for their fantastic efforts on this night. Rohn Pierce (Canisius College) made his 2013 debut for Edenton and pitched three scoreless innings to get the ballgame into extra innings, tied 2-2.
Edenton, against Brad Torres in the top of the tenth began the inning with a Reese single, an Alex Delgado (Emmanuel College) sacrifice bunt and a Harris walk. Torres was lifted for Michael Kaufman and after an error by Mustangs third baseman Keelin Rasch extended the inning, Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) brought'em all home with a bases clearing double for a 5-2 Steamers lead. Hampton now has 18 RBIs in 11 games this season.
Pierce earns his first win for his four shut-out innings of relief, improving to 1-0 and Kaufman took his first loss of the season, falling to 0-1.
With the victory Edenton sweeps their first overnight road trip and improves to 7-4, having won three in a row. Martinsville falls to 3-6 and has dropped four games in a row.
The Steamers are off tomorrow before starting a three game home stand on Monday, June 10th.
