Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL - The Hammerheads took advantage of an error in the sixth inning, scoring twice en route to a 3-2 win over Clearwater on Friday night.
Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, Avery Romero started things when he reached on a one-out single. After Chad Wallach walked, Jesus Solorzano hit a groundball to third that went right through the wickets of the third baseman Harold Martinez. Romero scored on the error to tie game.
Cody Keefer would then ground into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners.
That would bring up the number nine hitter Noah Perio who was starting just his third game of the season in left field. Perio delivered when he dropped a single into right to plate Wallach.
It was a night in which the Hammerheads got outstanding pitching. Starter Austin Brice rebounded from a rough outing to out duel Clearwater starter, and 2014 first round pick Aaron Nola. Brice allowed two runs (one earned) on just three hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out eight and walked two.
With one out in the sixth and runners on first and second, Brice was relieved by Casey McCarthy who got out of the jam thanks to a strikeout and a groundout.
McCarthy would get out of another jam in the seventh. With one out he allowed a double to Corey Bass and then uncorked a wild pitch to move the runner to third. After McCarthy got a groundout he walked Everett Williams who then stole second.
With two runners in scoring position, McCarthy struck out Anthony Phillips to end the threat. The righty would earn his third win of the season thanks to the effort.
Sean Donaltello picked up his third save in three chances when he tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Jupiter jumped on Nola, the younger brother of former Hammerhead Austin Nola, in the first inning when Justin Bohn singled and scored on a double to right by Matt Juengel. The righty would settle down to allow just three more hits the rest of his outing, but the effort was not enough for Clearwater.
The Hammerheads and Threshers will play the third game of the series on Saturday. It will be another Dog Days of Summer at Roger Dean Stadium and all fans are invited to bring their dog to the ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
