Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - The Corpus Christi Hammerheads (3-4) bounced back from back to back losses Monday night posting a 44 - 36 win over the Rio Grande Valley Magic (2-6) in front of 2,431 fans to improve their bid for the 2011 post season.
In a game where both team's offenses seemed to be out of sync, it was the Hammerheads defense that would be the difference maker on the night forcing 3 turnovers and sacking Magic QB Gary Cooper four times. "Our defense played well again this week and we took advantage of the opportunities we had", said Hammerheads Head Coach Dustin Almond. "We still have some things to clean up on the offensive side of the ball thought before our next game".
Corpus Christi opened the scoring with 2:16 remaining in the first quarter when Skyler Moore capped off a 7play 48-yard drive with a two-yard TD run. WR Scott Palmer who filled in at Kicker for Darren Brown added the extra point to give Corpus Christi a 7-0 lead. Rio Grande Valley would answer back at the 14:12 mark of the Second Quarter on a 9-yard pass from Cooper to WR Danny Young. However, the Hammerheads won't take the lead back just 1:14 later when QB Anthony Andre hooked up with WR Nate Dunn for a 26-yard TD strike. The Hammerheads would never surrender the lead despite some tense moments late in the game to hold on for the eight-point victory.
With the win Monday, and a quirk in the SIFL schedule, it means that when the team takes the field for their next game in Lake Charles on May 28th, they will be one game above .500. The next two scheduled opponents for Corpus Christi would have been the Mobile Bay Tarpons and the Lafayette Wildcatters. However both team have ceased operations for the duration of 2011 giving the Hammerheads two forfeit road victories.
The Hammerheads next home game won't be until June 5th when they take on the Louisiana Swashbucklers.
