Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

JUPITER, FL - Florida State League President Chuck Murphy announced yesterday that a total of four Jupiter Hammerheads were selected as Post-Season All-Stars. SS Danny Black, RF Marcell Ozuna and CF Christian Yelich were the players recognized. Additionally, Jupiter Manager Andy Haines was selected as one of two coaches on the staff. The team was selected by compiling the votes of field managers, official scorers and club sports writers representing all twelve teams in the league.

Despite having been on the disabled list since July 18, Black was chosen as the utility infielder on the All- Star squad. Black was leading the Hammerheads with a .314 average when he was sidelined with a sprained right wrist. The Topps Player of the Month in June, Black was second in the FSL in batting average (.348), runs (21) and on-base percentage (.435). He had 11 multi-hit games in the month and tied for the league lead with 32 total hits in June. In 78 games prior to his injury, Black led Jupiter with 30 multi-hit games. The Marlins drafted Black in the 14th round in 2010 out of the University of Oklahoma.

The All-Star nod marks the second this season for right fielder Marcell Ozuna, who was also selected to the Mid-Season team. As of Tuesday, Ozuna is tied for the league lead with 22 home runs and sits alone atop the rankings in RBI (89) and total bases (218). Ozuna is currently tied with Jason Stokes (2003) for the Hammerheads single-season RBI record of 89. He is only one homer shy of tying Chris Schwab's single- season mark of 23 set in Jupiter's inaugural season of 1998. Ozuna can also reach the runs scored record of 89 by crossing home plate just four more times (Gaby Sanchez, 2007). The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native was signed by the Marlins as a non-drafted free agent in 2008.

Like Ozuna, this will be Yelich's second All-Star selection this season. Yelich currently leads the team with a .319 batting average and is second in the FSL. He leads the league in slugging (.511) and OPS (.904). Yelich leads the Hammerheads in doubles (28), triples (4) and stolen bases (19) through 100 games played, despite two DL stints this season. Yelich missed the first week of the season after suffering a fluke elbow injury, but was named the FSL Player of the Week for April 16-22 upon his return. He also missed nearly three weeks after suffering a concussion in early June. The 20-year old California native was the Marlins' first round pick (23rd overall) in the 2010 draft.

In his first season with the club, Haines has already guided the Hammerheads to their most wins since 2008. On Wednesday, August 23rd, Haines was at the helm when Jupiter recorded their 1,000th win in franchise history. Last year, as the Manager of the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Low-A), Haines led a core group of the same players with him this season in Jupiter to an unlikely South Atlantic League Championship. The 2012 campaign marks his fifth in the Marlins' organization.
