Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - The Jupiter Hammerheads topped the Vero Beach Dodgers 3-2 Saturday night at a soggy Holman Stadium. It was the Dodgers 32nd one-run loss of the year, despite a career-high 12 strikeouts from Marlon Arias. The rubber match of the series will be Sunday evening at 5:00 PM.
The 21 year-old Arias was largely in control throughout the night, though a couple of mistakes ended up costing him the win. In the second inning, Edgar Valera, a .167 hitter, lined a two-out, two-strike single to center that scored the game's first run. In the fourth, Brad McCann led off with a wind-aided home run to right and Carlos Piste snuck an opposite-field homer over the fence with two outs in the sixth inning.
Meanwhile Jacob Mardeaux matched and even bettered the performance from Arias. The former 1st Round pick struck out eight over 7 1/3 innings. The other 14 outs came on the ground, including two key double plays. Vero scored one run in the fourth when Russ Mitchell led off with a double and later came home on the second of those double plays.
The other run came during the Dodgers best chance to overtake Jupiter in the eighth inning. Shane Justis double with one out and Jamie Hoffmann walked to knock out Marceaux. Blake Jones came in and hit Eloy Gutierrez with a pitch to load the bases. He then uncorked a wild pitch to plate Justis to pull the Dodgers within 3-2. However, Jones retalliated with back-to-back strikeouts to keep the tying run at third and the lead run at second. Harvey Garcia then tossed the ninth for his 19th save.
