Gwinnett Braves to Announce Mascot Name
September 9, 2008 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Gwinnett Braves today announced the team's plans to announce the name of its mascot, a portly cartoon groundhog, on Monday, September 15, 2008 at Lawrenceville Elementary School (122 Gwinnett Drive) at 10:00 a.m. Chopper, Pop-Up and Shadow, submitted by Jim Bennett of Lilburn, Richard Keating of Lawrenceville and Nicki McElreath of Mount Airy respectively, are the three final names selected from the 4,396 entries the Braves received during the "Name the Mascot" contest.
Fans had the opportunity to decide the winner through an online voting poll on the Gwinnett Daily Post web site. 5,109 fans cast their vote during the five day voting period.
"We plan for our mascot to be a major representation of our team and our brand in the community," said Gwinnett Braves General Manager Bruce Baldwin. "For this reason, we wanted our community and future fans to be actively involved in the naming, origin and character of the mascot."
Modeled after the recent Democratic and Republican National Conventions, the students of Lawrenceville Elementary School will help to unveil the fan-selected name of the Gwinnett Braves mascot. Hosted by Tony Shiavone, the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, the groups of students will cheer and lobby for their respective mascot name.
The mascot is inspired by General Beauregard Lee, Ph.D., star of the Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn. "Beau" is Georgia's Official Weather Prognosticator and internationally recognized furry forecaster that like the Braves mascot, will signal the dawn of spring. The toothy whistlepig (or woodchuck, formally known as Marmota monax, proud member of the rodent family) was created by New York branding group SME.
The Gwinnett Braves is the Triple A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. For further information on the Gwinnett Braves and 2009 season tickets please visit www.gwinnettbraves.com or call 678-277-0300.
