CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers struck early against the Lakeland Flying Tigers and never looked back to take a 5-2 victory on "90's Night" at Bright House Field.

Brandon Short picked up Clearwater's first hit of the game in the second inning with a loud double to left to lead off the frame. Harold Martinez advanced Short to third with a groundout to the right side before Chris Serritella singled to put the Threshers up 1-0.

Anthony Phillips singled to put runners at first and second, but Serritella was caught stealing at third with Phillips trailing behind him into second. Corey Bass then blooped a single to center to score Phillips and stretch the Threshers' lead to 2-0.

Clearwater (23-31) struck for two more runs in the fifth.

Roman Quinn doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Angelo Mora skied a sac fly to center to plate Herlis Rodriguez to make it a 3-1 game.

Brian Pointer then crushed a double into the right-centerfield gap to push across Quinn and give the Threshers a 4-1 advantage.

Martinez added an RBI single in the eighth to plate Pointer and extend Clearwater's lead to 5-1.

Jordan Guth (3-3) took the hill for Clearwater and set a season-high with seven innings pitched and tacked on five strikeouts while allowing just one run.

Ethan Stewart came on to pitch the eighth and struck out the first man he faced before allowing a single, but got a double play off the bat of Curt Powell to end the threat.

Cody Forsythe worked the ninth and gave up a solo homer to Austin Green and hit Connor Harrell, but limited the Flying Tigers to just the one run in the final inning.

Game two of the three-game set will take place Saturday night at Bright House Field with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Coverage starts at 6:15 p.m. on threshersbaseball.com.
