
Gurwitz, Culbreth Push Canaries to Series Win vs. Apollos

SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Canaries (17-16) picked up another victory over the Houston Apollos (5-28) Thursday night. Zane Gurwitz hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to power a 12-7 series clincher at The Birdcage. The Birds are now 7-2 against the Apollos this season.
Ty Culbreth (6-0) was credited with the win for the Canaries. Culbreth pitched five innings and allowed three hits and one run (one earned) while striking out eight Apollos. Culbreth shut out Houston the first four innings and left the bases loaded in a 1-1 game in the fifth. Yosmel Naranjo (0-6) was credited with the loss for the Apollos. Naranjo pitched 4.2 innings. He allowed eight hits and five runs (five earned).
The Canaries offense blew up for 16 hits and 12 runs. Gurwitz exploded for a solo home run in the fourth inning and a grand slam in the fifth inning. Gurwitz recorded four hits, six RBIs and two runs. Jabari Henry hit one out of the park for a two-run blast as part of a four-run Canaries sixth. Henry had four hits, three RBIs and two runs. Wyatt Ulrich, Cade Gotta and Nick Gotta each recorded two hits.
The Canaries will start a weekend series vs. Gary SoutShore Friday night at The Birdcage. Game one will feature RHP Tyler Garkow (1-3, 6.95 ERA) on the mound for the Sioux Falls Canaries and LHP Trevor Lubking (1-3, 6.23 ERA) on the mound for the Railcats.
