San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls and rookie goaltender Aaron McKenzie have agreed to terms for the 2005-06 season, head coach Martin St. Amour announced Tuesday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. McKenzie is the first San Diego native to sign a full-time contract with the Gulls.

The 21-year-old goaltender, who used to practice with the team, has been an avid Gulls fan for years. Assistant coach and former Gulls defenseman Jamie Black coached Mackenzie during his amateur roller hockey playing days.

McKenzie has spent the last two years playing juniors for the South Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Hockey League. During his two-year stint with South Surrey, the 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder posted a 32-22-0 record with a 3.45 goals-against average and .892 save percentage.

"Signing Aaron gives us more depth in goal if one of our two goaltenders [Tyler Weiman and Tom Lawson] gets called up," St. Amour said. "We're lucky enough that Aaron was available. He's young, has some real good talent and is a bona fide professional goaltender. Personally, I'm really happy that he's going to be playing for us. Jamie and I have seen him grow up in San Diego and it's great to see his hard work pay off."

The Gulls open the regular season Friday in Alaska and open their home schedule Saturday, Nov. 5 against Stockton. All games can be heard live on KLSD 1360AM and www.sandiegogulls.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. Most games can also be viewed on the Gulls' web site, courtesy of B2 Networks.
