San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - In front of a sold out crowd at the San Diego Ice Arena at the first and only exhibition game of the season, the Gulls beat the Long Beach Ice Dogs 4-2.
The Ice Dogs opened up the scoring at 4:42 of the first period off setup passes from Zdenec Vanc and Tyler Johnston. The Gulls tied the contest late in the period on an unassisted power play goal from newcomer Clayton Read.
Just two minutes into the second frame, R.J. Enga scored his first goal in a Gulls jersey to put the team ahead 2-1. Dan Cousineau and Dean Tiltgen earned the helpers. The lead didn't last long as the Ice Dogs Daniel Kim slipped one past Gull's rookie goaltender Jason Stone at 11:50, tying the game 2-2. The goal was unassisted. At the ten-minute mark, the Ice Dogs female goaltender, Danielle Dube appeared between the pipes. Just three minutes later and after a series of penalties by both teams, the Gulls once again regained the lead on a shorthanded goal by Read at 12:46, his second of the game. Trevor Sherban earned the lone assist. Stone faced 15 shots in the second and held on to a 2-2-tie heading into the third.
Both teams traded several power plays in the third, however neither team was able to capitalize. The period was highlighted by the stellar play in front of the net by Dube. The Gulls Dean Tiltgen finalized the scoring with an empty netter at 18:48 of the final stanza.
