HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Rubber-armed Lindsey Gulin worked his way in and out of trouble for eight innings, carrying the Huntsville Stars to a 4-1 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits at Joe W. Davis Stadium and forcing a fifth game in the best-of-five Southern League Championship Series.
The winner of Sunday night's 6 p.m. affair in the Rocket City will be crowned the 2007 Southern League Champions.
After Gulin walked the bases loaded in the first inning, John Jaso's RBI fielder's choice provided the Biscuits with an early lead... and, as it turned out, with the visitors' only run.
Montgomery stranded two runners in each of the first two innings, left the bases loaded in the fourth, and deserted two more men on base in the fifth inning against Gulin (2-0). The 30-year-old southpaw allowed seven hits and four walks in all, striking out six.
Gulin received all of the offense he would need in the third inning. Facing Biscuits starter Mike Prochaska (1-1), Alcides Escobar beat out a potential inning-ending double play to plate Steve Moss with the game-tying run. Steve Sollman followed with a two-run homer to left, giving Huntsville a 3-1 lead.
It was the only blemish in seven strong innings from Prochaska.
In the eighth, Brendan Katin capped off the scoring with an RBI single to left off of Nick DeBarr.
Luis Pena pitched around a two-out Fernando Perez single in the ninth to record his second save of the postseason, striking out Josh Asanovich looking to end the game.
Montgomery will send righthander Richard De Los Santos (5-4, 2.75 ERA in the regular season) to the mound in Game 5, to be opposed by Huntsville lefthander Steve Hammond (7-9, 4.69). A victory for the Biscuits would mean a second consecutive Southern League championship in the franchise's fourth year in existence. The Stars have won the Southern League championship on three previous occasions: 1985, 1994 and 2001.
