Fayetteville Guard News Release
Fayetteville, NC --- The Fayetteville Guard will travel to Cincinnati this weekend in search for their first victory. They will take on the Marshals in the US Bank Arena, kick off time is 7:30 p.m. and all action can be caught on ESPN Radio 1230 AM.
Last weekend The Guard battled the Odessa Roughnecks and almost had a win, but a penalty call took it away. Fayetteville defensive back Thomas Stanley intercepted a pass by Odessa Roughnecks quarterback Jason Johnson with 1:40 to play, but Stanley's big play was wiped out by a pass interference call against a teammate that allowed Odessa to score and pull out a 52-43 win, making The Guard 0-2.
Fayetteville had fallen behind 45-27 early in the final period when quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen directed back-to-back scoring drives around a big stand by the Guard defense. Withy-Allen found Brandon McDowell with a 24-yard touchdown pass with 7:24 to play to cut the deficit to 45-33.
A penalty would push the Roughnecks back to the 14 where they faced a third-down-and-14. Johnson threw a pass just short of the end zone that was tipped by a Fayetteville defender. The ball ricocheted into Stanley's arms and he headed up the left sideline.
Odessa took advantage of the interference call to score on Barnett's 2-yard run with 1:26 left to seal their third straight win.
Last Saturday, the Cincinnati Marshals fell to the River City Rage 55-53; knocking the Marshals to 0-2 on the season after a loss in the season opener against Beaumont. The Marshals had pulled away with 2 points with only minutes left in the game, but on the ensuing drive QB Brett Dietz threw an interception sealing the Rage win.
The Fayetteville Guard will play Montgomery Maulers April 16 at the Crown Coliseum. For ticket and team information log onto www.fayettevillegaurd.com.
