
Groove Acquires Soumaila Samake

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Greenville Groove of the National Basketball Development League has acquired center Soumaila Samake, according to an announcement today by NBDL Executive Director Karl Hicks and Groove Head Coach Tree Rollins. The Groove also waived center Shawn Igo.
Samake, who averaged 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds in 13 games with the Los Angeles Lakers this season, was originally selected by the New Jersey Nets in the second round (36th pick overall) of the 2000 NBA Draft. In all, Samake has played in 47 NBA games, averaging 1.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.
A native of the Republic of Mali in West Africa, Samake did not play college basketball. His NBA career high is 10 points and seven rebounds against Portland on Oct.30 of this season. Born March 18, 1978, his named is pronounced soo-MY-luh sa-MAH-key. The 6-foot-10, 245-pound Samake speaks English, French and his native Bambara.
Igo averaged 5.1 points and 4.7 rebounds in 14 games for the Groove.
Samake is expected to be in uniform when Roanoke visits Greenville Thursday.
