Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, CA - The Fresno Grizzlies are proud to announce their "Wild About Reading" program reached its goal of over 50,000 participating students and over 500,000 books read in the Central Valley.
"Wild About Reading," which started in early January, utilizes baseball to promote reading in the classroom. Each student that reads 10 books in five weeks earns two free tickets to a 2006 Grizzlies game. The program is kicked off with a visit from Grizzlies mascot, Wild Thing, for a school wide assembly. The program has grown 30 percent in just its third season from 38,200 last year to 50,523 as of today.
The Grizzlies raised excitement for reading in the following six counties: Mariposa, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings and Tulare. One school that always looks forward to "Wild About Reading" is Tarpey Elementary.
"The âWild About Reading' program has sparked Tarpey children's interest and competitiveness for two years now," said Georgiana Leonardo, Tarpey Elementary School "Wild About Reading" Coordinator. "Over 80 percent of our school participated this year in reading their 10 books. What a great way to promote reading!"
"This has been one of our best programs the last couple of years because of its running success," said C.E.O. Pat Filippone. "We look forward to having the children visit Grizzlies Stadium this season."
"Wild About Reading" still has three appearances left with media opportunities at each. The following schools are Madison Elementary School (Fresno) on March 14 at 1:15 p.m., Del Rey Elementary School on March 15 at 2:30 p.m. and Wilson Elementary School (Fresno) on March 16 at 1:30 p.m.
