FRESNO, CA - The Fresno Grizzlies Community Fund will be launching its "Wild About Reading" Caravan on Monday, October 18th. As part of the week-long program, the Grizzlies lovable mascot Parker will hand-deliver information about registration for the award-winning, educational "Wild About Reading" program to local elementary schools.

"Wild About Reading," presented by the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), has expanded every year, reaching over 54,000 Valley students in 2010 by utilizing the fun and excitement of Grizzlies baseball as an incentive to promote reading. The Grizzlies hope to grow the program to 70,000 students in 2011.

At each of the schools participating, a Grizzlies staff member and Parker will read and act out "Parker Goes on Vacation," a humorous children's book that touches on themes of energy conservation and environmental stewardship. Each student will then be challenged to read 10 books in five weeks to earn two free tickets to a 2011 Grizzlies game at Chukchansi Park.

Now in its eighth year, the "Wild About Reading" program will open with an assembly at Lincoln Elementary in Fresno on Wednesday, January 5th, 2011. Lincoln Elementary has helped the Grizzlies kick off the "Wild About Reading" program each of the last five years. The Grizzlies staff will visit students in Fresno, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, and Merced counties between the first week of the year and Opening Day, on April 7th.

"‘Wild About Reading' illustrates our commitment to the entire Valley," said Grizzlies Director of Community Relations Danielle Witt. "The program continues to expand every year, and we are proud that it has grown into one of the largest educational initiatives in professional sports."

In 2009, "Wild About Reading" was honored with the Fresno Compact Business Partner Award. With the strong nexus between quality education and school business partnerships in mind, the Fresno Compact annually acknowledges 10 businesses that have contributed not only financial resources, but also staff to support schools in Fresno County.

The Fresno Grizzlies will begin their 10th season at Chukchansi Park on Thursday, April 7th, 2011 when they welcome the Las Vegas 51s to downtown Fresno. Season ticket and mini-plan packages are now available at the Chukchansi Park Box Office or by calling 559-320-HITS.
