Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies surrendered four home runs on Tuesday night, accounting for 10 of the 11 runs the Sussex County Miners scored in an 11-3 loss at GCS Credit Union Ballpark, the team's sixth in a row.
The game started as a pitchers' duel as Gateway starter Brendan Feldmann (4-6) and Sussex County starter Dwayne Marshall (7-3) held the other team scoreless through the first three innings.
Sussex County then got to work in the top of the fourth inning. Juan Silverio singled with one out and David Maberry followed with a two-run home run to take the early 2-0 lead. An unearned run later scored on an RBI groundout by Alex Toral to make it 3-0.
After the Grizzlies were retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame, the Miners went back to work in the top of the fifth inning when they scored six runs thanks to a solo home run by Martin Figueroa and a grand slam by Toral to explode to a 9-0 lead. Later in the top of the seventh inning, Toral hit a two-run home run for his second of the day to make it 11-0 Miners.
The Grizzlies finally got their offense going in the bottom of the seventh inning. Clint Freeman led off with a single and Jackson Pritchard hit a double to put runners at second and third with no outs. Two batters later, with one out, Freeman came home on a wild pitch and Andrew Penner drove in a run on an RBI groundout to make it 11-2. The Grizzlies would add another run in the next inning when Zach Racusin drilled a solo home run off the left field light tower to make it a 11-3 ballgame, completing the scoring.
The Grizzlies will look to even their series against the Miners on Wednesday night, July 27 at 6:45 p.m., with Taylor Sugg making his first start of the season on the mound for Gateway.
