Grizzlies fall 5-4 in extras, split series with OKC Dodgers

In a battle of two first place clubs, the Oklahoma City Dodgers (37-23) hung on to beat the Fresno Grizzlies (38-26) 5-4 in a wild 10-inning affair Monday night from Chukchansi Park. With the win, the Dodgers earned a series split. On the other hand, the Grizzlies fell to 8-10 in one-run affairs, 2-3 in extra innings and 6-7 in the fourth game of a series.

Fresno starter Josh James (no-decision) hurled another quality start. He went six innings, scattering three hits, two runs (one earned), walking a pair and fanning 11. James threw twice in the homestand, punching out 24 batters in 13 frames.

Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after a sacrifice fly to center plated Edwin Rios (walk).

Jack Mayfield (2-for-5) quickly knotted the game at one in the bottom of the second when he destroyed a pitch to center field. It was his first longball at home and his seventh overall. The four-bagger also expanded his hit streak to a team-high 10 games, becoming the sixth different Grizzly to reach that threshold this season.

In the top of the third, Travis Taijeron bumped the Dodgers to a 2-1 advantage when he pummeled his fifth wallop of the year to right-center.

Mayfield tied the game once again in the bottom of the fifth when he doubled off the wall in left field, scoring Derek Fisher (walk) from first.

Rob Segedin (2-for-3) drove in his second RBI of the night when he doubled home Rios in the top of the ninth. A batter later, Angelo Mora spanked a RBI single, extending the Oklahoma City lead to 4-2.

With their backs against the wall, Fresno found a way to even the game at four. A double to shallow right by Jon Kemmer (2-for-4) made it 4-3. Then, Kyle Tucker laced a single to center, sending Garrett Stubbs home.

In the top of the 10th, the Dodgers pushed the go-ahead run across with a force out. The 5-4 advantage was enough for Joe Broussard (4-1, win) to close the door.

Andrew Thome (4-2) suffered the loss for the Grizzlies. Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte struck out four in two innings of relief for Oklahoma City.

Fresno enjoys an off day tomorrow before trekking to New Orleans for a three-game set starting Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PT from Shrine on Airline. Grizzlies RHP Brock Dykxhoorn (0-0, 2.65) and Baby Cakes RHP Pablo Lopez (1-0, 3.00) are the probable pitchers.
