Grizzlies Come up Just Short

Marion, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies (38-56) were out-slugged by Southern Illinois (53-42) by a score of 13-11 on Saturday night.

The Miners wasted no time putting up three runs in the first inning highlighted by a two RBI double from Ian Walters.

Jose Rosario blasted his 12th home run of the year to open up the second inning and put the Grizzlies on the board.

Gateway used a five run third inning to vault themselves into a 6-3 lead. Dustin Woodcock had a bases clearing double in the inning.

Southern Illinois pulled back within one in the bottom of the third with Anthony Brocato doubling in a run to make the score 6-5.

Nolan Earley tied the game in the fourth inning with an RBI single.

Jay Prather scored Jose Rosario on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to give Gateway a 7-6 lead.

Ian Walters cracked a grand slam in the sixth inning to cap off a six run inning putting the Miners ahead 12-7.

The Grizzlies fired back in the top of the seventh with four runs. Woodcock and Justin Jones had RBI singles and Owings drove in two with a double to pull within one at 12-11.

The Miners picked up an insurance run when Jared Mang came around to score on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to make it 13-11.

Joey Pulido entered in the seventh inning and finished the game strong for the Miners in the win.

Gateway and Southern Illinois will play their season finale at 5:05 CT on Sunday at Rent One Park.
