Lexington County Blowfish News Release
GASTONIA, N.C. -- The Achilles heel of the Lexington County Blowfish this season has been getting the timely hit. Tonight their opponent was unable to get the timely hit.
The Fish came to Sims Legion Park and knocked off the Grizzlies 4-0 en route to their first shutout of the season.
Lexington County started their scoring in the second when a pitch from Josh Hiatt (North Carolina) got past the Grizzlies' catcher Logan Koch (Francis Marion) allowing Grant Miller (Western Michigan) to score.
Miller stayed involved in the third when he knocked in Drew Ellis (The Citadel) with an RBI groundout on the right side extending the Blowfish lead to 2.
Lexington County added two more in the fifth on back-to-back two out bases loaded walks to Sam Brooks (Bethune-Cookman) and Bennette Hill (North Greenville) giving them the four run lead.
That would be all that starter Hayden Deal (Presbyterian) needed as he went six strong innings without allowing a run and only allowing two hits.
Deal yielded to Tate Gillespie (Navarro) who danced in and out of trouble three times in the ballgame.
In the sixth and seventh innings, Gastonia put two on both in scoring position with nobody out and failed to score as Gillespie buckled down and held the shutout tight.
In the eighth the Grizzlies had runners on first and second with one out then runners on the corners with two away and failed to score for the third consecutive inning.
Gillespie shut the door on Gastonia in the ninth and sealed the Blowfish's 20th victory shooting them a game over .500. The game keeps the Fish in the fourth spot in the overall CPL standings with three weeks to play.
Lexington County has the night off tomorrow then will travel out to Forest City to play the Owls on Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and coverage will begin on z93.1 FM The Lake at 6:50 p.m.
