Grizzlies Announce 2007 Coaching Staff

Fresno, CA- The Fresno Grizzlies are proud to announce the 2007 coaching staff scheduled to join newly appointed manager Dan Rohn. Jim Bowie will return as hitting coach for his third consecutive season in Fresno. Former Giants pitcher Mike Caldwell will become the team's pitching coach and Jim Simmons will take over as the athletic trainer.

Caldwell joins the Grizzlies after spending 13 years (1971-1984) as a Major League pitcher with the San Diego Padres, the San Francisco Giants, the Cincinnati Reds and the Milwaukee Brewers. Caldwell had his best season in 1978 when he went 22-9 with a 2.36 ERA and finished second in the Cy Young Award balloting to Ron Guidry.

Last season Bowie guided the Grizzlies offense to a .268 batting average. In 2004 he was the hitting coach for Eastern League champion New Hampshire, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Bowie began coaching in 1997 with Double-A Mobile of the Padres organization and enjoyed a 12-year career in the minor leagues with the Mariners, Tigers, Athletics and Padres organizations. He played six games in the Major Leagues with Oakland in 1994 hitting .214.

Simmons is in his fourth year with the Giants organization and spent part of the 2005 season as the Grizzlies' trainer. Before joining the Giants organization, Simmons spent the 2003 season with the Toronto Blue Jays. Simmons graduated from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida and earned a Masters Degree from the University of Alabama.

Grizzlies Manager Dan Rohn will make his first public appearance in Fresno when he joins new Giants Manager Bruce Bochy at the 2007 Hot Stove Banquet on Saturday, February 10 at TorNino's Banquets.
