Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - Dmitry Afanasenkov and Darren Rumble could soon become the first Grand Rapids Griffins alumni to have their names engraved on the most coveted trophy in sports, as their Tampa Bay Lightning face the Calgary Flames in the 2004 Stanley Cup finals. Game 1 of the best-of-seven series takes place at 8 o'clock tonight at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Afanasenkov, who notched three points (1-2-3) in 18 games for the Griffins in 2001-02 while on loan from the Lightning, has appeared in each of Tampa Bay's 16 playoff games to date. The left wing shows three points (1-2-3) while averaging 12:51 of ice time.
Rumble, a reserve defenseman who has yet to play in the postseason, totaled 82 games with the Griffins from 1998-2000, registering 41 points (9-32-41).
In their eight-year history, the Griffins have counted five Stanley Cup champions among their ranks, each of whom won the Cup before playing his first game for Grand Rapids: goaltender Pokey Reddick (1990 Edmonton), defenseman Marty McSorley (1987 and 1988 Edmonton), and forwards Jason Williams (2002 Detroit), Blake Sloan (1999 Dallas) and Danton Cole (1995 New Jersey), the Griffins' current head coach.
