San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (July 29, 2002) - The records speak for themselves. Quarterback Mark Grieb and offensive specialist James Hundon became the most prolific pass-catch duo in San Jose SaberCats history during the team's record setting 2002 season.
San Jose, the highest scoring team in the Arena Football League this season, will host the Tampa Bay Storm in a quarterfinal playoff game in the Compaq Center at Noon on Saturday, August 3.
Grieb, who is a leading candidate for the AFL Offensive Player of the Year award, established three new team single-season passing marks while Hundon set another three standards leading the SaberCats to a league record 13 wins.
These two superstars realize the game is a team effort and don't pay close attention to personal accomplishments.
In running up a league-best 12 consecutive wins to begin the season, Grieb, who was lost for the season with a broken collarbone at Arizona on July 12, broke his own team records for passing yards and touchdown passes in a season. He threw for 3,346 yards and 70 scores after connecting for 3,095 yards and 62 TD passes in 2000.
"The records, and stats in general, are an indication of the type of season we've had," noted Grieb. "The linemen did a great job blocking, and the receivers did a great job catching the ball and running routes."
"You can't have the success and set any type of records unless you do the little things and have the people around you that are not only talented but work hard," he added.
A five-year veteran, Grieb also set a mark for the most completions in a season with 249. Ironically, the old mark (235 in 1999) was held by Scott Wood, whom the SaberCats signed last week to backup starter John Dutton after Grieb was injured.
Hundon, who set season marks for receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches, was shocked to learn he entered the team's record book. "Really!" exclaimed Hundon when notified of his records. "I had no idea."
The second-year AFL player, amassed 1,464 receiving yards in 14 games, surpassing Steve Papin's 1998 record of 1,256 and his 98 receptions broke Papin's 1999 record of 91.
Hundon also led the league and set a team season record with 35 touchdown catches, bettering the mark of 28 set by James Roe last year.
"It feels good to be the record holder," said Hundon. "I knew that if I played at a consistent level I would have a productive season."
An NFL veteran of four years with the Cincinnati Bengals, Hundon has enjoyed his success in the arena game. "Everything that I've always wanted to do for a professional team I'm doing now."
