June 29, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
Thanks to another excellent start by pitcher Evan Greusel the Calgary Vipers defeated the Long Beach Armada 6-2 at Foothills Stadium in front of 1583 fans. Greusel went seven innings for the victory while not allowing an earned run and striking out five batters. The Vipers used a three run third inning to take the lead and never gave it up. The win snaps a four game losing streak and improves Calgary's record to 20-11.
Long Beach got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning with a Octavio Martinez double, a David Ramirez sacrifice bunt, and Stephen Yoo reaching on a fielding error by first baseman Jose Morban to put runners at the corners. Petie Montero scored Martinez with a RBI fielder's choice for the 1-0 lead.
The Vipers responded in the bottom of the inning with a Drew Miller single and a Jorge Tang RBI triple to tie the game at one.
In the bottom of the third inning Calgary grabbed their first lead starting with a double by Travis Drader and a walk to Darryl Brinkley. Miller followed with an infield single and second baseman Yoo threw the ball away on the play to allow Drader to score. Felix Jose plated another run with a RBI single and Jose Morban hit a sacrifice fly for the 4-1 advantage.
A run was added in the bottom of the seventh inning with a Brinkley walk, steal of second base, and a two-out RBI double from Jose.
The Armada took a run back in the top of the eighth inning with a Norm Hutchins single, Martinez double, and a Ramirez sacrifice fly for the 5-2 score.
Patrick Arlis singled in the bottom of the eighth inning, Nelson Castro doubled, and Jorge Mejia hit a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring at 6-2.
Greusel (6-0) picked up his third straight victory and dropped his league leading E.R.A. to 2.10. In the month of June, Greusel went 5-0 with a 2.31 ERA throwing 39 innings and striking out 27 while walking only seven. Rik Currier (2-4) was saddled with the loss while reliever Jon Huizinga threw the final two innings giving up one run while not walking a batter and striking out the side in the ninth inning.
