Chico Outlaws News Release
ST. GEORGE, UT - The Chico Outlaws pounded out 16 hits and rode a solid pitching performance by veteran Greg Bicknell to a convincing 13-5 victory over the St. George Roadrunners Saturday night at Bruce Hurst Field...the win was the first on the Outlaws 10-game road trip and stopped a string of six consecutive losses.
Chico never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 2-0 lead when Gabe Riley homered in the 2nd inning with a man aboard. The Outlaws put a big inning together in the 4th, but nearly came away with nothing - a single by Shane Cronin and a double by Lino Garcia put runners at second and third with nobody out...but St. George starter Devin Collis came back to strike out Riley and get Matt Ceriani to ground out without the runners advancing. Eric Pringle kept the inning alive with a walk to load the bases...and Chico then delivered four straight two-out RBI hits - Steve Boggs grounded a single into right to plate a pair...Jesse Kovacs doubled home two...Casey Garrison followed with a run-scoring single and Julian Benavidez knocked Garrison in with a double...by the time the dust had settled, 10 Outlaws batters had come to the plate in the 4th inning and the Chico lead was 8-0.
Seth Loman's RBI double put St. George on the board in the bottom of the 4th, but the Outlaws responded with two in the 5th - Pringle slashed a base hit to left field to plate Garcia and Riley to push the Chico lead to 10-1. Bicknell surrendered a run in the 6th inning and Loman touched reliever Rudy Quinonez for a solo homer in the 8th...but in the 9th the Outlaws pretty much put the game away, going up 13-3 on an RBI double by Boggs and a two run double by Benavidez. Todd Gelatka came in from the Chico bullpen to close out the contest, and though he served up a two-run homer to Brandon Taylor, Gelatka got the final three outs to give the Outlaws their first victory since June 21st.
Bicknell (2-1) struck out five and didn't walk a batter in his seven innings of work to earn the win, with Collis (2-2) getting tagged with the loss. Garcia and Riley had three hits apiece to lead the Outlaws offense, with Boggs, Kovacs, Garrison and Benavidez all adding two hits on the night...the Roadrunners had 14 hits in the losing effort, with Liu Rodriguez going 3-for-5 and four other players - Loman, Greg Lemon, Cody Nowlin and Claudio Arias - chipping in with two hits apiece. Saturday's win improved the Outlaws record to 10-21 on the season, with St. George slipping to 14-17 for the year. Chico will take Sunday off before kicking off the final leg of their road trip Monday night in Reno against the Silver Sox...left-hander Jason Roach (0-4) will get the start for the Outlaws in the opener of the four-game set. First pitch is 7:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
