
Greg Simmonds Named A-League Player of the Week

Charleston, SC - Charleston Battery forward, Greg Simmonds has been named A-League player of the week following his stand-out performance in last Saturday's 2-0 win over the Richmond Kickers. It was Simmonds first game for the Battery and was also his first game against his former Club, Richmond; Simmonds tallied 4 goals and 3 assists, with the Kickers in 2003.
Simmonds scored the first goal of the game in the 32nd minute, slotting home past Kickers goalkeeper, Ronnie Pascale. Simmonds was also involved in the second goal as his right-footed shot rebounded off the cross bar for Battery midfielder Chris Goos to finish.
Simmonds began his pro-career in 1999 with the Hershey Wildcats where he scored 16 goals and added six assists for 38 points, and was named A-League Rookie of the Year.
A native of Jamaica, Simmonds spent two seasons at Hershey before joining MLS's Miami Fusion in 2001, recording two assists in nine games played. While with Miami in 2001 Simmonds played two games on-loan for Charleston, scoring one goal (07/27/01 vs. Cincinnati).
Simmonds spent the 2002 season with the Rochester Raging Rhinos where he was twice named A-League Player of the Week. Simmonds' career totals include 42 goals and 22 assists for 106 points in five professional seasons; he has represented Jamaica at the full National Team level.
2004 Home Opener / Season Tickets
The Charleston Battery 2004 home opener is set for this Saturday, April 24 at Blackbaud Stadium vs. the Richmond Kickers; kick off 7:30 PM. Its Schedule Cup Giveaway night with a free A-League Championship commemorative schedule cup for everyone in attendance. There will be live music and $1 drafts in the Miller Lite Beer garden until kickoff. 2004 season ticket packages are still available starting at $120. There are also a limited number of Three Lions Club and Battery Club memberships available.
