Elmira Pioneers News Release
Tuesday July 9, 2002 - Dunn Field, Elmira, NY
Greg Keagle spun 7.2ip of 4 hit ball ending his personal 4-game losing streak and the Pioneers hung on to a 2-1 win over the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs Tuesday night at Dunn Field in front of 823 fans.
It was Keagle's first win since June 8 vs. Adirondack improving his season mark to 4-5. Ron Bush made a terrific play sliding in the wet outfield grass to preserve the lead in the 8th and Julio Perezmaintained his perfect ERA with a 1-2-3 9th inning for his 9 save, 2nd in the league.
Fromer Albany-Colonie Diamond Dog Brandon Pernell delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 6th. The Pioneers traded Eric Estes for Pernell last week. Ironically, Este was the winning pitcher for the Dogs in Monday's game against his former team.
Elmira (24-20) ended their 2 game losing streak and have won 5 of their last 8. A-C had won 9 of their last 11 and they miss their opportunity to pull back to the .500 mark.
Jason Von Haefen (3-3) threw well but was pinned with the loss for the Dogs giving up just 2 run-scoring hits in 6ip.
A-C struck in the top of the 4th when former Pioneer Dan Singletary drew a 1-out walk, moved up on a groundout and scored on a single to RF by Gary Villacres.
Elmira tied it in the the bottom of the 4th. Rafael Alvarez drew a 2-out walk and scored on a double blasted to left-center by Pedro Quero for hs team leading 29th rbi of the season. The Pioneers took the lead in the 6th with Rod Smith drawing a lead off walk. He stole 2nd and 3rd and eventually scored with 2-outs on the rbi hit to RF by Brandon Pernell.
The Diamond dogs threatened in the 8th with runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 outs. With the league's leading HR hitter at the plate in Vic Davila, LH Donnie Thomaswas able to induce a grounder to the right side of the diamond. 2B Ron Bush scrambled over and made a nice sliding stop in the wet grass in shallow RF. His throw from his knees barely beat Davila to the bag for the final out preventing Zorilla from almost definitely scoring the tying run.
LH Jeff Andra (4-4, 3.06) battles LH Bryan Morse (3-0, 1.42) in the Wednesday game which concludes the first half of the season. Both pitchers have led the league in ERA at one point this season.
