Greenville Steals Win from Charleston

GREENVILLE, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs got off to an early 6-0 lead in Greenville on Friday night, but allowed the Drive to plate seven unanswered runs at Fluor Field in The West End en route to a 7-6 walk-off win in 11 innings in South Atlantic League action. The loss ends Charleston's seven game hitting streak.

The RiverDogs fall to 22-16 overall and move into a tie for second place in the Southern Division. The Drive improve to 13-28 but remain in last place in the Southern Division standings with the loss.

RiverDogs starter Evan Rutckyj finished 4.2 innings and gave up a pair of runs on eight hits and struck out a season high eight. Charleston's bullpen was put to work Friday evening as Adam Smith, Ben Paullus Dietrich Enns and Alex Smith were all used. Alex Smith (2-2) took the loss, after he allowed the game winning run to score in the bottom of the eleventh. His final line was two-thirds of an inning and he gave up a run on two hits.

Offensively for Charleston, the bats struck early for four runs in the first inning, but went cold after the sixth inning. The RiverDogs had no hits in innings seven through eleven and only had three baserunners in that span; two on hit-by-pitches and one via a walk. Greg Bird hit his third homer of the year during the four-run first inning for the RiverDogs.

Greenville starter Pat Light continued his struggles this season as he surrendered six runs, five earned on seven hits. Light gave up four of the six runs in the first inning. Light was relieved by Yunior Ortega, who tossed four shutout innings of one hit ball and struck out five. Ortega was lifted in the ninth for Kyle Kraus (2-0) who picked up the win. Kraus tossed three no-hit shutout innings and allowed a walk with three strikeouts.

Offensively for the Greenville Drive, they were surprisingly led by their five, six and seven hitters in the order: Tim Roberson, Drew Turocy and Jayson Hernandez. Turocy finished 4-for-5 at the plate with three singles, a triple and a walk, while plating two and scoring once. Hernandez and Roberson each finished 3-for-6. Pinch runner Dreily Guerrero scored the game winning run in the eleventh after replacing Roberson following his leadoff single.

The RiverDogs and Drive match-up Saturday evening for game three of this four-game set at Fluor Field at the West End with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. Charleston will send RHP Vicente Campos (1-1, 3.97 ERA) to the mound as Greenville counters with LHP Cody Kukuk (2-4, 3.99 ERA).
